“I met a guy,” I blurted out to Jacob, deciding to tell him about Lux. He whipped around and stared at me with a surprised expression while I attempted to hide my persistent blush. “I mean it’s not like we’re anything serious, but—”
“The infamous Lynn met a guy?” Jacob made no effort to hide his obvious shock. “Why do I find that hard to believe?”
I scowled and shoved him. “It’s not like that Jobs, you’re making it seem as if I have no romantic love life.”
He shot me a look. “Anyone in this place can find it hard to believe that you’re settling with a guy you just met, especially when you’re in knee deep with the new case you're assigned to.”
“It’s not like I like him or know him,” I tried to spare what little dignity I had left. “Look I know I shouldn’t have done it but I looked into his file and get this—there is no one named Lux Wesley in this city.”
Jacob frowned and leaned in slightly. “He doesn’t show up in the files?”
I shook my head and entered my office. “There is no one registered in the city by the name of Lux Wesley.” Something I found suspicious. Of course I knew that some people in New York changed their name constantly but for some reason this caught my eye.
Jacob rolled his eyes as he shut the door. “I don’t think you should be worrying about this now, Lynn. As much as I care for you and want you to settle, now isn’t the time for you to be fessing over this.”
I bit my lip. “You’re right,” I sighed and slid my sweater off and rested it on the chair. “I should have never even tried getting to know him.”
“Now, have you found any leads on the case?” He asks me. I’m grateful that he changes the subject.
“No,” I gritted my teeth. “This is infuriating me down to the bone. The autopsy on the heads of the bodies show obvious signs of struggle, the average torn throat and many bruises on the face—typical for a person that was brutally murdered. But here’s the catch; there is no fingerprints. None, whatsoever. Usually the autopsy team finds something useful but they didn’t even fine a pinch of sweat.”
He raised his eyebrows. “Seems like we are dealing with a serial killer. Have you checked the footage of the last time the victims were seen? The last time they bought something, with their credit cards or cash?”
I nodded, feeling the stress rising beneath my skin. “Everything. The funny thing, is that the footage has been erased. The tech team can’t trace the culprit and it worries me since all possible leads for this case have vanished. What am I supposed to tell the reporters, Jobs? They are already going to my house begging for a statement that I’m not allowed to give since I have absolutely nothing.” Everything that I told him was true. I couldn’t find no leads at all and it infuriated me because I wanted to avenge Mason’s death so badly. But how could I do so if I had nothing to work with?
Jacob pulled me into a hug. “I know you better than anyone, Lynn—not counting Bona since he was the one that raised you—so I have no doubts that you’ll solve this case. There’s a reason why you’re one of the best homicide detectives in the city.”
I felt tears prickle my eyes but I didn’t allow them to fall. “Thank you, Jacob.”
As he separated, he suddenly grinned. “So tell me about this guy named Lux.” I instantly blushed, taken aback by the question as I pushed him away.
“It’s nothing, honestly,” I told him, scratching the nape of my neck. “It was during the funeral, I walked away because I needed a moment and then after that he just… comforted me.” Before he could tease me I continued. “Something’s off about him. I don’t know if you heard of him, the kids at Rye are saying that he was in an accident a few years ago and it went national. He was driving and he sped off a bridge, and coincidentally his parents died near the same moment. It was tragic—”
Jacob snapped his fingers. “I’ve heard of him. His name was... Oden–no, Owen Wesley. The media went crazy over him.”
I frowned. “He must have changed his name, but why?”
He shrugged. “People change their names for a lot of reasons, you just have to ask him why he did it. Be safe around him, Lynn. Although I hadn’t met him yet he seems like he holds a lot of baggage that’s too heavy for you to carry. Be careful, please.”
My frown deepened. “It’s not like I’m considering dating him, now is not the time for me to be dating people, especially when I’m like this.” I gestured to my face. “Who would want to date me?”
“I would,” he joked. “Besides, what if he was the killer?”
I rolled my eyes. “What person with amnesia would be responsible for killing five people with cold blood?”
“I don’t know,” Jacob shrugged again. “There’s a possibility.”
“What kind of person with amnesia would be responsible for this?” I scoffed at him. “Be rational, Jacob.”
He raised his hands. “Just saying, Lynn. The person could be anyone you wouldn’t suspect.”
I bit my lip and took his words into consideration. I tried imagining Lux—the man who comforted me at my lowest, the man who had an aura of tainted innocence—killing and enjoying the deaths of those five people. I couldn’t see him doing it, blaming someone as innocent as him for killing those people. He had already been through enough so if I happened to blame him everyone would be on his side and despise me because he had amnesia. It was wrong to do so but that is how the public worked, no matter how wrong the culprit was. This was why I had to bend the law and make the world see that whoever was responsible did what they did, even if it happened to cost me my job.
“If it was him,” I began and took a deep breath. “Which is highly unlikely—it would be hell trying to get everyone to see that he is guilty. I appreciate your concern Jobs but if you met him you would see that he wouldn’t be responsible for what happened.”
“Like I said before I am just putting it out there,” He explained. “I’m not pinning anything on him. What I am saying is that you should be careful around new people like him because you may be next.”
“I know,” I whispered. “I know.”
