Four

After school, Louis and I walked side by side in a comfortable silence. The only sounds were our shoes trudging through the light layer of snow. We passed the big, rich houses and approached the more ghetto side of the neighborhood. Louis lived somewhere in between-not too rich, not too poor. He always walked me home, afraid of the dangers my streets held.

We walked for a few minutes, enjoying each other's company, until we stopped right outside my house. It was shaggy and small, but not as uninviting as the dirtier shacks further in the neighborhood.

"Do you want me to come inside with you?" Louis asked, warily searching the windows for Edwin.

"Sure. Edwin won't be home until 5 anyways. We have 2 hours." I was relieved to spend a little more time with him. I unlocked the door and stepped inside with Louis behind me.

An hour and a half later, we lay on the on the couch, my head resting on his lap as he mindlessly fiddled with my hair. A rerun of The Vampire Diaries played on the TV but we weren't paying attention to it. Louis' fingers grazed and massaged my scalp, earning a content sigh from me. I glanced up at my best friend.

Louis was deep in thought.

"What are you thinking about?" I sat up a little and faced him.

"You." His blue eyes met mine. "I know it's been hard with your mom gone and all...plus living with that douchebag, Edwin, who isn't the nicest to say the least..."

I looked at him confused.

"And?"

"A-And I was wondering if you wanted to live at my place for a while. I know I don't have the biggest house, what, with 4 sisters, my baby twins, and my parents. But it'll be better, right? Better than living here with that creep."

I grinned, thrilled at the idea, but a frown quickly took over.

"I would love to, but, Edwin would surely come and find me. And I don't want to endanger you or your family like that."

"But I-" He stopped talking, looking flustered. "Nevermind." His eyes darted around the room, hoping I didn't notice his little slip.

"No, tell me! What were you going to say?" I pushed, leaning closer to his warm body.

He froze, glancing at my lips then locking his eyes to mine.

Out of nowhere, his lips crashed into mine.
