When Peter woke up, it was just after seven am. In his freak out, he woke Karter up and knocked over the coffee table. Karter didn't plan on heading to school that day, so Peter promised to take notes and tell the office for him, which earned him a small 'you dork' from his boyfriend. It took Peter a few minutes to realised he didn't have any clothes, so Karter lent him a pair of jeans and a graphic tee shirt Peter had bought him a month ago. They ate breakfast together, and Peter left are apartment smiling.
His walk to school was ordinary, but his thought process was a mess. He still felt guilty for what had happened, but kept telling himself that what Karter didn't know couldn't hurt him, and the the kiss didn't mean anything. Needless to say, Peter was so lost in his thoughts he almost got run over three times in a matter of minutes. He arrived at school with seconds to spare.
"Did you hear about the bombing?"
"Wasn't James Barnes Captain America's friend?"
"Why is Captain America a fugitive again? I thought he was patriotic?"
Four questions floated through the hallways that day, and Peter hated every second of it. Every so often, someone Peter had never spoken to before would come up to him and ask how Karter was doing.
"He's fine." Peter would smile, holding his books closer to his chest to hide his upper body, a nervous habit of his. "He's a bit shaken, but he's fine." Their relationship seemed to be the other topic of interest that day.
"Hey, Peter." Liz Allen said, smiling at him. "I'm sorry to hear about Elizabeth." Peter held back an exasperated sigh, and simply nodded awkwardly. "If you or Karter need anything, know that I'm here, yeah?" Peter nodded, and just as Liz left, he noticed Flash turn the corner towards him. He braced for the 'sup, Penis Parker' greeting, but it never came. Instead, Flash just shot him a small look of pity, and kept walking.
"Did you see that too?" Peter whispered to Ned, who'd arrived moments after Liz. "I'm not going crazy, right? Flash wasn't being a dick?" Ned looked at Peter, confused as ever, but he just shrugged. Michelle looked as if she was going to say something as she walked passed them, but kept her head low. "Why is everyone being so weird?"
"Your boyfriend's sister almost died." Ned pointed out, whisper shouting. "I guess there must be a truce going on. An expression of solidarity." Peter raised his eyebrows, but he couldn't stop the feeling of relief washing over him. A day of no Flash, no shitty comments, and people being decent human beings to him? How couldn't he love it?
Peter's lessons consisted of teachers treading carefully, a moment of silence, and a meeting with the School councillor. She asked Peter almost twenty times if he was doing okay, and by the end of it, Peter was half tempted to say no and let her rant to get it over with. He didn't, though. He was too tired to. People being overly nice to him became exhausting very quickly. Ned was the only one being normal.
"Wanna go and find more pets for your computers?" Ned asked as the final bell rang. Peter's face lit up, and he grinned. "I take that as a yes?"
"Definitely." Peter said as he slammed his locker shut. The two headed down the corridor, being followed by a chorus of goodbyes from random students they'd never met before. "Do you think they'll be like this tomorrow?" Ned shrugged again, and Peter smiled, relaxing. A stress free day was so much more emotionally taxing than a stressful day for some reason, Peter noted.
