Peter hadn't spoken to Karter since he got back Germany, and it had been two months. The conversation on the plane after he calmed down was short and anything but sweet.
"I didn't want to have to do it this way, Karter." Peter started, surprised his- he didn't know what to call him at the minute- surprised Karter picked up. "I told you my two biggest secrets with the explicit request for you them to yourself. What do you do? Not only do you tell both of them, but you tell them to Tony Freaking Stark!" Peter's sentence started off calm, but descended into his first angry outbreak for ages. A sigh came from the otherside of the call.
"Hell's spells, Peter." Came the exasperated voice of Karter. "What did you want me to do? Not tell him about you being trans and end up with you fighting in a binder and breaking your ribs?" Peter held back a smile at Karter's exuberant choice of expression to start a semtence. "Besides, he knew about Spider-Man anyway." A pause descended on the two, as the words echoed around Peter's head.
He knew about Spider-Man anyway.
"I think we should stop this." Peter got out eventually. He was holding back his emotions. He couldn't explode on the jet, and he only had a few minutes before Tony got off the phone to who Peter assumed was Pepper. "You've been so good to me, but lately we've both been..." Words failed the Parker boy, but Karter's noise of afermation made it clear they were on the same page. "And I need some alone time." Another pause descended, this time broken by Karter.
"So this is goodbye?" He said, a voice crack audible that felt like a knife in Peter's heart. He was angry with Karter, sure, but he still loved him. And then a though occured. Maybe he wasn't in love with Karter. Peter squeezed his eyes shut to block out the thought, but the seed of doubt had been sown, grown, and harvested. He wasn't sure he was in love with Karter, but maybe he was in love with the idea of being in love with Karter.
"For a while." Peter nodded, shoving his internal debate aside for the time. Karter needed straight answers for the end of their gay relationship, and while Peter would usually laugh at his own gay/straight puns, now wasn't the time.
"A while is indefinite." Karter pointed out, his voice smoothened out from before, and Peter knew that he was crying. Maybe not sobbing, but there were definitely tears involved on both sides. The voice thing was something Karter did, hiding his emotions so the other party remained calm.
"Just give me some time."
Peter had momentarily forgot about his saddeness when Tony gave him the suit, but two months later he needed a release from the stress and regret of being Spider-Man and missing Karter. So he did what any smart, logical person would do, he phoned a friend.
"So let me get this straight." Derek began, confused as ever. "You and Karter broke up months ago and now you decide, after a long ass time to get over it, to call me, the guy you kinda sorta cheated on Karter with." In hind sight, it was a pretty stupid idea.
"Shut up and hug me, you broken biscuit." Peter said annoyed at himself and Derek and Karter and the world. He basically collapsed onto the ground like a child, half pouting as he lay on his back. Derek hesitated, but as the wind picked up and began to whip around the roof top they were on, Derek felt it was probably a good idea, both to keep warm and to catch up. They'd texted intermittently since Peter's spamming text explaining of everything but the Spider-Man thing, but not enough in both of their opinions. Derek lay next to him, and Peter tested his head on Derek's extended arm.
"I hate that you can't see the stars in New York." Derek commented, moving his free hand to gently rub Peter's stomach. The spiderboy closed his eyes, the touch felt good. "At home you can see every constellation constellation from here to the next galaxy." Peter smiled at the thought, and for that night Karter and Spider-Man were both forgotten. It was just Peter instead daydream haze with a boy he couldn't get off his mind, no matter how hard he tried.
He knew about Spider-Man anyway.
