First day of senior year, Jenna was set up to have an amazing one considering her grades, position in her groups and popularity status. Jenna had worked hard to get where she was - the top of her very large school's social ladder with a glaringly impressive resume for college. And she did it all without being one of the "mean girls", having earned a reputation for being smart, funny and nice. Her parents were supportive, together and happy. She had a coveted weekend job at a makeup boutique. And she even had the most adorable pets.
Yep. Jenna Mitchell had the perfect life.
That is, until she walked into school that day.
"Miss Mitchell. Can I please see you in my office?" Mr. Taylor, the school's principal, waved her in.
"Sure thing, Mr. Taylor." She followed him, not thinking much of the request.
He took his seat. "Jenna, there's been a small issue with your schedule. Due to cutting dance class, we had to change your schedule."
She blinked for a moment, worried about the change but gathered herself quickly. "That's fine, sir. I can always do something else. What are my options?"
"Well? We only had one option for you, and that was shop class." He waited for the girl's reaction.
She didn't say anything for a moment. Then... "Shop?"
Mr. Taylor slid the new class schedule across to her. "Yes, Miss Mitchell. It'll be your first hour. Class is about to start. Sorry for the change." He looked down at the stack of paperwork on his desk.
Jenna always made the best of things. But this? She wasn't sure she could. Her impression of shop was it was for blue collar working guys, troublemakers and tomboys. None of which she was.
She walked into class less than gleeful. Taking a look around the room, she was worried her assumptions were correct. Without looking back up, she took the only seat available and folded her hands in front of her with a sigh.
The teacher, Mr. Cleary, walked into the room and addressed the class. "Hello students and welcome. Hopefully we won't have any major accidents, missing fingers or almost deaths this year. We will learn all about the different tools and such needed to construct a variety of things so that some of you can go on to be builders... or simply be able to put together your IKEA furniture. I'll send you home with a list of items you'll need for the year. Meanwhile, take a look around and introduce yourself to the person at the table with you. They will be your shop partner for the year."
Jenna closed her eyes as she took in a deep breath, turned her head and paused, apprehensive of who she would find next to her. Then, she opened her eyes.
"Hi. I'm Ben." He had his hand held out to her.
Her breath caught. And in that instant, she knew her untarnished reputation was about to be ruined.
