"Look!" Tony pointed.
Sharon screamed, pulling her legs up into herself.
"Faster!" Ken ordered.
"We're trying to escape, not kill ourselves!" I pushed on the gas more. The needle on the speedometer pushed past one-forty.
Tony whipped around, slamming into his seat. "It's gaining on us. We're not going to make it."
I shouted, "Calm down!"
"I can't believe they did it. I can't believe they bombed us!" Sharon was uncontrollably crying. "All of those people. They're all dead."
"Ken. Calm her down. She needs to hold it together." I swerved around a couple pickup trucks.
The bomb hit L.A., but we were in a small town 50 miles north. When it came across the emergency broadcast system, I knew we had to try to make it to my grandfather's old fallout shelter on our hunting property outside of town. Sharon, and I grabbed my boss's Porsche, barely missing several accidents in the panic. We picked up our boyfriends, who worked together in the mechanic's shop across town, and started through the dirt roads.
Glancing in the rearview mirror, I saw the glowing from the fire in the explosion. It resembled the sun on a hazy day when the temps were over a hundred. Glancing again, I could see the rolling clouds of smoke that was crossing the land, carrying debris and radiation with it, coming straight for us.
I brought the vehicle to a halt at the entrance. Jumping out, I froze. "Keep going." I muttered , forcing myself to run for the door.
I punched in the code.
It blinked red.
I punched it in again.
Again, it blinked red.
"What the...?!"
A face appeared through the glass.
"Mark! Thank god! Let us in!" I shouted through the door at my brother.
"Tiff?"
"Yes! Hurry!"
After a long, tense moment, the door opened.
I ushered in the others and was about to enter when I heard a noise. The sky had gone black, so I couldn't see very well, but I knew the sound of a vehicle slamming into a tree. Squinting, I tried to see who it was.
"Mom?"
"Get inside, Tiff! Go!" She fell out of the driver side door of the crumpled car, injured.
I started after her. "Mom!"
Someone caught my arm.
"Get inside, Tiff!" she repeated.
I was yanked back. "Come on!" my brother shouted. "It's coming!"
I stumbled back, half dragged by Tony and Mark. The wind stopped abruptly when the door slammed shut. I ran for the window and looked to find my mom as I heard the sounds of the locks sliding into place.
"I can't just leave her out there!" I went for the keypad.
I was dragged back and down the stairwell into the tunnels. When I struggled to go back up, Tony threw me over his shoulder and carried me the rest of the way. Mark slamming the second, inner door shut and keying in the lock code.
This time, it was me who was uncontrollably sobbing.
