The Cave of Swallows.
I recognized it the moment my eyes opened, even if my vision was still blurry from whatever was in the concoction they kept injecting me with. I was propped up against a tree, still in the same clothes. Standing, I took in the view.
What I didn't recognize was what Caroline was doing. After a moment, my eyes began to focus, but she was picking up what looked like some sticks and rocks that might have been arranged in a circle. I couldn't be sure.
I started to speak, my throat sore, "What..."
"Oh good! You're awake. Ready for your next adventure?" Warren handed me a bottle of water.
I took a swig, letting the coolness of the liquid sooth the rawness of my vocal cords. I sighed. "Rock climbing?" I looked down into the gaping hole in the ground. "You want me to scale down this thing?"
Warren scoffed. "Who the hell climbs down?" He threw a pack at me. "You're jumping."
My knuckles were white from gripping the nylon of the pack. "Jumping? Didn't I just jump off a cliff for you assholes?"
Caroline started to lunge at me but stopped. Looking at Warren's hand on her arm, she snarled. "You want to get her killed? Because it will only take a single call. One call. She's dead, and we still have you."
"Do you want me to kill you?" I barked back.
"Josh, Josh, Josh. Do you seriously think now is a good time for this whole macho thing?" Warren waved a hand at me dismissively. "We're here for a bit of fun, not fighting."
"Fun? Bite me." One side of my upper lip twitched in a sneer as I pulled on the backpack, my eyes fixed on the still seething woman. "Fine. What's the plan?"
Warren shrugged on a similar pack and smirked. "Listen. You just do what you're told, and we will handle the rest."
I finally broke my staredown with Caroline. "You almost make it sound like a fieldtrip, not a hostage situation."
He laughed. "If you'd just see this as a series of your beloved Instagram videos you post so often, showing off for your followers, then this really would go so much more smoothly."
Standing near the edge, I looked down. My heart began to race with the familiar feeling that came with the rush of adrenaline before every stunt. Extreme sports and thrill seeking was something I'd pretty much become known for. In that moment, I knew that it had something to do with why these people had targeted us.
The plastic clicked as I fastened the last of the buckles. I started adjusting the straps and making sure the parachute pack was as secure as possible. "I still want to know why her... or why me. What is this all about?"
Caroline stepped back up, having regained her composure. "You'll see."
Without warning, she shoved me.
I heard Warren shouting from the ledge I'd just fallen from, a tinge of humor in his tone. "I'll meet you at the bottom!"
"Screw you!" I shouted back and pulled the rip cord.
I'll admit, jumping into the mouth of The Cave of Swallows was gorgeous. Yet another location I'd wanted to go to but hadn't made it. Something that seemed to be a running theme thus far... being taken to places I'd wanted to go to but hadn't. Another thought that came to mind as I started to contemplate if it was a factor in the whole situation.
However, before the question could be processed, I heard a rumble from the earth below. At first, it was deep... low. Then, it grew louder. I wanted to let go of the grips and cover my ears, but I knew better than to. Instead, I steadied my breathing and searched below me to see if I could find the source of the noise.
My feet hit the ground, but my eyes were still scanning the cave. But to no avail. I could only feel a vibration coming from the ground. It was an unsettling feeling to say the least.
"Yes!" Warren landed nearby a few minutes later.
I hadn't moved. Something deep in me had froze. I couldn't discern if it was fear, wonder, curiosity or what. Something knew I was there. That, I was certain of in my very soul.
I felt a pat on my shoulder. Warren, having shrugged off his parachute, had the expression of a kid in a toy store. "I knew you'd wake it."
"Wake what?" I was still scanning the recesses of every shadow.
"Tisk, tisk. So many questions."
I felt the needle slip into my neck before I could get out of the pack.
"Not yet," he whispered just before I passed out.
