The leader of the Urbeantrum, a man they called Xiontar, explained more about the ritual Caroline had been doing and urged me to get Emma back at all costs. Something about her grounding me. I wasn't about to argue with him. Not only because I was scared of them but also because he was right.

They led me out of the caves and back to an open space. It wasn't long before Warren and Caroline tracked me down. Extremely unhappy with my little disappearing act and the lack of results they were hoping for, Caroline stabbed the needle in harshly and knocked me out.

I woke much later to find myself in a wingsuit on top of Churfirsten mountains. Warren was zipping up his own suit while Caroline was pouring over what was clearly another ritual. Angry and on a mission to get to Emma, I stood and ran for the edge, throwing myself out into the air without warning.

Warren called out, "Wait!"

But it was too late.

I'd been trying to figure out what Warren and Caroline wanted. As I was floating past mountain peaks and jagged rock, everything became clear.

To explain, let me back things up.

My name is Josh. My girlfriend is Emma. Warren and Caroline? They're part of my crew. No, I'm not a race car driver or a musician... at least not on the regular. I've done both. But more so? I'm a rich guy thanks to my parents' business ventures and all that was passed down to them.

With a business already set up for me and an accessible trust fund, I took to thrill seeking. Not only did I go out and mess around with stunts, but I took it to a new level. Before I knew it, I was being sponsored, traveling the world, trying new and crazier things.

Eventually, I had a crew with me everywhere I went.

Base jumping, BMX stunts, rock climbing, skydiving, zip lining, glider flying, etc. There's very little I hadn't done, and many of my antics, as my mother called them, were used for some brand advertising.

Warren and Caroline came aboard over a year before. Warren, my guide on each trip with Caroline making sure the equipment was ready and the tech was catching the footage. They also led a small team of people who basically took one man's need to throw himself off of or into things and made it look epic and marketable.

We'd gotten close. How do you not when you spend months on the road with people? Five months prior, we'd made a stop in New Orleans. Emma was there, on location, filming her latest movie. Warren and Caroline joined us, and we made a mini vacation out of it. They'd never been, and Emma wanted to show us all some of the more underground spots she'd learned about while researching her role.

"This city is riddled with some of the coolest people!" Emma was practically bouncing as we walked up one of the city's smaller and more narrow streets. "This way. Madam Zurine said she's up this way."

"Madam?" I quirked an eyebrow at her before glancing back to Warren and Caroline.

She sighed. "Oh, come on honey! This will be fun!"

I chuckled and kissed her on the forehead. "I love it when you get so passionate and excited about things."

She continued to tug me up the sidewalk. "Do you guys believe in Voodoo?"

Warren stayed quiet, only offering a shrug. But Caroline offered the rare smile. "My grandmother dabbled in various things."

"You believe?" Emma's eyes went wide.

Caroline went back to her usual stoic self. "I know."

A chill ran through me. Emma must have felt the same thing, because she gripped my hand a bit tight. "This way."

A door creaked open as we approached an archway. I paused, not letting her drag me ahead. "This is far too horror movie standard for me."

"Seriously?" Emma scolded me. "You don't even believe in any of this."

"Then he shouldn't have anything to worries." A woman spoke from the open doorway.

"Madam Zurine!" Emma was clearly excited to see her.

Madam Zurine held a hand out toward me, placing her palm on my chest. Her eyes rolled back, and she began to shudder.

Emma dover for her, but Caroline grabbed Emma and yanked her back. "No. Let her finish."

"Finish? What did she start?" Emma was struggling in Caroline's grip.

I was frozen in place. It was the strangest thing I'd felt... the energy coursing through every bit of me. I managed to get out a couple words. "I'm fine."

Emma spun around to the couple. "What is she doing to him?"

"She's assessing him." Caroline finally let go.

Warren, with his usual almost too-at-ease smile, patted her on the shoulder. "You did good. Madam Zurine is the real thing. With so many fakes and con artists around here, I'm surprised you found her."

"She didn't," Caroline corrected him. "Zurine felt him all over her."

An exasperated Zurine let her hand drop and looked up at me. "Your friend is very astute."

"What is going on?" I looked around at everyone.

Madam Zurine invited us inside where she proceeded to explain that I had a special soul. She went on about some tie I had to some ancient creatures that dwelled in the depths of the earth. Something that was passed down through the generations of my family besides money, and it was supposedly strong within me. But she warned me never to use it. "While you can call and even control these creatures to a degree, their blight on the earth would be a deadly one. And the power it takes to control them often spoils a man's soul, making him just as ruthless and deadly as the beings he controls."

Ominous, I know.

We excused ourselves and went to a local jazz club. I was ready to get back to my vacation.
