(Submitted to the Zombie profile's piece for survival plans)
Your location at the time of the outbreak.
Detroit, Michigan
At the time of the outbreak, who are you with?
Alone
Upon hearing of the outbreak (or indeed, seeing evidence of it with your own two eyes) what is your immediate reaction?
I hear strange noises outside my apartment and peek out the window. "Oh crap. Well? It was bound to happen." I grab the machete I keep near the door and set it out. Taking the hammer and nails I keep in my hall closet, I begin to board up my windows, leaving slats movable to view out, while I formulate a plan.
Now is the time to put your plan into action. What do you do first?
I smile, priding myself for asking for a top floor apartment and feeling vindicated for what was commonly referred to as paranoid thoughts, I head back to my hall closet and pull out a canvas bag from the top shelf. Inspecting the contents, I make sure that everything is still there - three hand axes, two more machetes, three fire starters, a compass, two pocket knives, blade sharpener, a lock picking set, three boxes of candles, two battery operated lanterns with extra batteries, one fuel powered lantern with a bottle of fuel, crank radio, crowbar, four rolls of duct tape, two rolls of electrical tape, four wooden stakes (after all, it was a toss-up between a zombie apocalypse or vampires coming out of the closet, really.), packets of seeds, two boxes of matches and two swiss army knives. I then make my way around the apartment with a piece of paper and pen and inventory while gathering anything that can be useful, being sure to refrain from making noise if at all possible. Then, last but not least, I pull out the two power saws. If the electricity stays on, it can't hurt to have them in case I need to break into the next apartment or for some other necessity. Sure, they're noisy, but they could still be useful.
Here, detail actions you would take next.
After everything is surveyed, gathered, inventoried and such, I check the windows, listen to the hallway through the door and check the phone lines, both cell and lined, check the internet, television and radio, all using one earbud to keep noise down but allow for listening to my surroundings still. I spend the next few hours checking for reasons for the outbreak, possible extraction plans, fearing possible mass bombing plans if it's local and growing slow, possible escape routes, and any other useful information. Plus, I listen for and watch out the windows for behaviors of the zombies and possible kill options. Anything I may need to know in case I have to abandon my apartment. While I listen and watch, I pack the most necessary items into a backpack, including a change of clothes and shoes, food, tools and necessities, just in case I have to run fast.
Every Zombie Apocalypse Survival Plan needs an end game. What's yours? Where do you intend to end up and hopefully keep the zombies at bay?
Once I figure out if it's contained or wide spread, I act accordingly. If contained, I make sure I know as much as I can about their behavior and their kill options, and I get on the move, having strapped weapons to myself and packed my backpack and pockets. There's no way I'm sticking around an area the government is surely about to bomb. However, if it is wide spread? Then it's a matter if the zombies are Night of the Living Dead or World War Z. The former? I hunker down and gather supplies from neighboring apartments, hoarding everything I can. They're slow moving after all and rather dumb. So, I have time. Silence is golden, so I'd attempt to get keys from the main office first, making having an universal key invaluable, right? Then, I pick them off as needed and wait until I can figure out a greater plan or a need to leave right away. If the later, I pack what I need and travel quietly to my car, which is a Prius. So, it's quiet and quick and small. Therefore, allowing me to weave around obstacles, and the engine shuts off when I'm sitting still. I therefore make my way out to the country and to one of the caves I've mapped out for shelter. Once there, I set up my supplies, tools and a barrier with homemade noise alarms. Then, I plant some of my seeds and settle in. Can't start growing more food too early after all.
