"Let me out of here!" Lauren had been shouting at the main gate for three days.
It was starting to drive me insane. Thankfully, I was able to escape it by barricading myself into the basement of the home I had called my own in the small town they'd stuck us in. We had electricity, so I usually escaped down there and played video games for hours.
Yes. I virtually killed hundreds of aliens like some sort of cathartic therapy.
Oh... My name is Paul. Humans had been all but rendered extinct when a race of aliens flooded our world, killing us off. Now? I'm in some small, British town that's had a wall built around it. A prisoner.
I'm not alone... as I think you've gathered. There's me, Aarav, Lauren, Kai, Sydney and Misha. We'd never met before all of this, the six of us. We didn't even come from the same areas of the world. Aarav didn't even speak English. We'd been here for nine months or so. Misha was certain that we were the last humans left. Of course, this led to hours of conspiracy theories from us all, trying to decide why we were kept alive and what they wanted with us. But after the first two months, our debates over the matter ceased, and we just... lived.
It wasn't like there was much else to do. The creatures that were keeping us there weren't exactly communicating with us. They'd barely even made appearances after literally throwing us inside the gates other than to keep us stocked with necessary supplies. There was no internet, phones, radio or television. But we had books, newspapers, magazines, DVDs, video games, CDs etc. That was enough to help... well, help all but Lauren and Aarav.
Aarav sat, comatose in an empty house. Sydney would visit twice a day to help him eat and go to the bathroom. Lauren went between screaming fits and continuous sobbing. Not that I blamed her. She'd lost her family, kids included, in the big kill.
That's what we called it... The Big Kill.
Cheesy? Whatever... who else was going to hear it? Right? We were alone.
I spent that night with the headphones on, listening to music, the door to my basement locked. Lauren hadn't shut up, and if things were going as they had before, her hands would be bloody from banging on the chain link fencing. She'd done it several times before when her mind got the best of her, and she was haunted by her dead children.
When I woke the next morning, I slowly pulled off the headphones, relieved that her voice wasn't echoing through the small, several block downtown area we'd been confined to. Figuring it was safe to venture out, I grabbed a granola bar from the kitchen and wandered up the street to Lauren's freakout spot.
Then, I stopped.
"Where am I? Who are you?"
There, just inside the gate, was a woman I'd never seen.
