I climbed out of the vehicle and looked over the Congo River as my team pulled my kayak out. The temps were high, but I was going to be too busy to worry about that.
"Alright Josh, meet you on the other end." Warren patted me on the back and got into the driver's seat.
Caroline, my medic, tested my radio, checked my kit and nodded before joining Warren.
I stood on the riverbank and centered myself. The opening of the Inga just beyond where I would enter the water. All nervousness washed aside and was replaced with excitement. I climbed into my kayak and shoved off, paddling toward one of the world's largest rapids.
Hitting with force, I maneuvered around the land obstacles, deep wells and drop offs with more ease than expected. Several points, however, sent me slamming into the side, my hips taking the brunt of the force.
Dangerously close to a whirlpool, my heart attempted to take residence in my shoes. It took everything I had not to slip into its grasp.
The rush driving me on, renewed adrenaline pushed me past the aching muscles.
As I approached the pick-up location, I raised my paddle and roared. "Yeah!"
