Every thrill seeker and adrenaline junkie will tell you that there's something freeing and liberating about gliding through the air, free falling or racing down or across a surface. I, as a thrill seeker, stand by that statement. And I can honestly tell you that it doesn't matter what you're going through. The moment you leave the safety of firm and level ground, your brain detaches.

Coasting over the Churfirsten mountains in a wingsuit, my fear for Emma's safety, my anger for Warren and Caroline's betrayal and my confusion about the Urbeantrum and whatever creatures they were talking about all swam around inside my mind, sure. But they were more like a turbulent pond that's locked away in a glass box rather than an all-engulfing tsunami of emotions.

I think that there's a possible connect between my longing to go out and fling myself off of mountains and damns and out of planes to my longing to clear my mind and get a better perspective on my life.

I had been so disengaged that day coasting over the Churfirsten that my landing was rough. Thankfully there was a fresh layer of snow that helped cushion the blow, but not by a lot. I went tumbling down, which allowed Warren and Caroline to catch up with me easily.

"If you keep trying to get away, I'm going to kill her just for the annoyance." Caroline spoke as she stalked up to me and decking me in the face without hesitation. "You will do as you're told, or she's done. Got it?"

My hand went to my jaw where her knuckles had connected. "Yeah. But I wasn't trying to get away. I mean, what the hell? Do you think I'm going to go at this point? I'd kind of like her back you psycho... alive."

Caroline balled her fist back up and drew it back, ready to send her reddened knuckles back against my cheek, but Warren caught her arm and snarled. "You need to get yourself in check. Get off the roids Angel Dust."

"Seriously? A comic book reference?" Caroline was still white-knuckled, but her attention was shifted to Warren and far more annoyed than ready to kill.

He shrugged. "Would you rather me call you..."

She cut him off. "I'd rather you actually pretend you're a damned adult and focus instead of playing house with our boy here."

Warren closed the distance between them and gripped her throat. "And I'd remind you to put yourself in check instead of pretending that you're in charge here."

I sat down on the ground, grabbing a handful of snow, pressing it to my swelling jawline. "Can I get a meal before or after you knock me out this time?"

Without looking at him, Caroline pulled a package of beef jerky out of her pocket and threw it at me. "I'll get the snowmobile ready to head back to the rig once you two are ready... sir."

He released her. "Good girl."

I found the intense anger that flashed through her eyes almost amusing as she pushed his hand away, paused to scoff at me then stormed off. She turned back before putting her helmet on and gave me this look that sent chills down my spine. I got to my feet and turned my back to her. "She's intense these days."

"These days?" Warren chuckled. "Nah. She's always been like this. She just toned it down a lot for work."

Taking a bite of the jerky, I shrugged. "Whatever. So, what now?"

He started walking to the vehicle where Caroline was waiting, motioning to follow. "Shall we find out?"

I saw the needle come out and braced myself. Just before she could sink it into my flesh, I shook my head. "Nothing happened this time. And I didn't see you do any ritual or whatever."
