People had been scurrying around for weeks. Some people were in a complete panic, understandably. I mean, there was an asteroid about the size of the moon about to hit us. For weeks, people worked to tie up loose ends or live their life to the fullest or whatever. Some looted. Some told their true loves how they felt. Some killed themselves. Some killed others.

Then there was me.

I sat on the lookout hill that rose over the city with a packed picnic basket, a few fully charged backup batteries, my phone for music and a couple good books... and a pocketed picture of my boyfriend, Ben, who had lost out to his panic and took his leave before the end could do it for him.

I filled a crystal champagne flute that I'd stolen from some random house with bubbly and rose it into the air. "To you, Ben. I'll see you soon."

After taking a sip, I closed my eyes. I'm sure it was my longing to hear his voice and feel his touch again that made it happen, but I swore I felt his hand on my cheek and his soft voice tell me he missed me.

I sighed and flipped through my playlists. Selecting one he'd made, I hit play and laid back. The death rock was visibly barreling toward us in the night sky, blotting out hundreds of stars from visibility as the sun tucked itself below the horizon.

I could hear screams in the distance. I turned up the volume until I gave in and connected my earbuds, thinking about all of the people that worked so hard to find ways to destroy it, unsuccessfully obviously. I pictured the hundreds of thousands of people huddling in fallout shelters. I thought about the shuttle mission that was floating around in space, refusing to come home after a failed attempt to blow the asteroid to pieces. Then, my mind wandered to the possibility that maybe quite possibly, there might be some people on ships, in outer space, stocked with equipment and supplies to start colonizing somewhere else if possible.

"Man, I would love to be on one of those." I entertained the thought for longer than intended.

Shaken out of my fantasy, I heard what sounded like a series of crackling and booms. Opening my eyes again, I sat up and pulled out my earbuds to see a number of what appeared to be missiles shooting upward. Some exploding by what I could only imagine was hitting the ozone, but I wasn't sure if any of them made it out. There were so many, I couldn't keep track.

A bright light flashed.

A minute later, I was rocked back by a shock wave. I didn't know if the bombs had worked, and the death rock had exploded or if it had made impact. All I know is that I hit the ground, and the next thing I saw was Ben.
