The young woman was sleeping when he arrived. This was her second day at the hospital. He walked near her and stood beside her hospital bed. He folded his arms on his chest then rubbed his chin while he examine the woman's face.
She was wearing a hospital gown. She maybe was in her early twenties, David thought. There were bandages on her head. There were dark circles on her closed eyes. She maybe had gotten asleep while thinking hard because he could still see the frown on her brows.
David noticed the bruises on her legs and ankle. He focused on her feet. The bruises went around her ankles. Both ankles. As if her feet were tied or been gripped tightly.
He brought out his disposable camera. He usually brought one in his jacket. He took a picture of her feet and ankles. It made a soft sound but enough for the woman to be awakened. He immediately hid the camera back to his jacket.
The woman looked at him. Scared. She got up and sit on her bed with her back on the wall. She pulled the blankets to her chest.
"Who are you?"
"I'm the one who brought you in this hospital."
The woman looked like she did not believe him. She just stared at him.
"We were driving at the highway and you overtook and oversped and crashed into a tree..."
The woman tried to think. "I do not remember..anything."
"Not even your name?"
"What's my name? They said you found me driving a car? Don't I own a bag or something. There must be some sort of identification in my car..."
David shook his head.
"What?! That's impossible. What about the car?"
"It was stolen. Not yours."
"Did I steal it?"
"You were driving it."
The woman cried in disbelief. Then suddenly she pressed her temples with the palm of her hands. She was in pain.
David rang for the doctor. The nurse arrived after a few minutes. Then she called for the doctor and announced that David arrived already.
The nurse injected some painkiller on the woman's arm. The woman was now lying silently on her bed, her eyes closed but not asleep. There were tears on the corner of her eyes.
The doctor asked David that they talk outside the room. David agreed and followed the doctor out. He closed the door behind him.
"We tried to ask her some vital records, you see, for hospital information but she stared at us blankly..."
The doctor explained.
"We conducted an MRI this morning. There was a concussion but we saw no critical damage on the tissues on her brain. The memory loss might have resulted from the loss of oxygen on her brain due to bleeding. In this case, we can be hopeful that the memory loss will be just temporary."
"She will experience pain for a couple of days but you may take her out already."
David was stunned. "Out?"
The male doctor nodded.
"Well, I-I am not a relative...brought her here 'coz it's my job. Where am I gonna take her?"
"She can't stay here either but uhm..you may check shelters for women but..."
David raised his brows waiting for an answer.
"Well, it is a pity. A person with amnesia must be well taken care of for her memory to come back as soon as possible."
"She will be taken care of at the shelter." David concluded. Already thinking of a shelter near the county. He was a bit disappointed he will not be able to find an answer about the bag full of money and the stolen car.
The doctor nodded but there was doubt in his eyes.
David already had something in mind. He could take a picture of her and tagged her as missing person.
