CONNER'S P.O.V.
I hear Lainey's scream before I see anything. But as I whip around to see what's happening, the scene shocks me. Lainey is sprawled across the forest floor with a deep looking gash in her side, seeping blood. What shocks me is what's behind her. A guy around my age stands before me, with a Beretta 92FS pointed to Laken's bowed head. I begin to step closer, but I stop immediately when he clicks off the safety. He challenges me with only his glare, but it's enough to me feel fear for Laken. You can tell he's seen more than any of us. You can see the pain in his eyes.
"Who are you?" I ask him cautiously.
"Your worst nightmare," he says grimly and puts pressure on the trigger, but before he could actually push it he slumps to the ground, revealing a bloodied Lainey holding a massive rock above her head.
"Surprise motherfucker," she says, dropping the rock next to his unconscious body.
I almost laugh with relief as I rush towards her with my arms stretched out for a hug. I envelop her in a hug and I honestly don't want to let her go. I've known her for less than 8 hours and she's already got a place in my heart. What's happening to me? I'm going soft.
Laken slowly gets off her knees and kicks the unconscious guy's side as hard as she possibly can. I could still see her fresh tears as they streamed down her face. She looks at the guy on the ground and kicks his gun towards where me and Lainey now stand. I release Lainey and get his gun, examining it closely.
"Full chamber." I state, tucking the gun into my waistband.
"Hell fucking no." I hear Lainey say as the gun disappears from my waistband.
"HEY! You can't have that." I say, putting out my hand for Lainey to put the gun. But instead she just laughs and cocks it.
"Now this is one hell of a gun." She says grinning widely as she tests the aim by aiming at a tree. "Nice scope too."
"Give it back Lainey." I command, thrusting my hand forward. She just looks at me like I'm stupid.
"Nahh, I think I'll keep it." She says winking at me.
"Smartass." I roll my eyes and drop my hand, giving up.
She puts her hand over her heart and smiles, "Aweeee! I'm so glad you think so Conner."
I roll my eyes once again and chuckle. "Pain in the ass."
She just laughs and starts setting up camp. We've decided to tie this stranger to a tree and wait for him to wake up, so we can question him. We each pick a spot a few feet away from each other so we can sleep as comfortable as possible. The girls decide to force me into being the night watch in case any walkers come or the stranger wakes up. So here I am, leaning up against a tree, watching over two girls and one stranger. An owl hoots and I nearly have a heart attack.
This is going to be a LONG night.
