Conner's POV
I feel her hand fall limp. I feel her heart stop. It feels as if my heart is being ripped out of my chest. I drop to my knees and hold her limp body close to me. I hold her head against my chest and let the tears fall from my face.
Laken, Sophia, Rick, and Carl crowd around me. I hear Laken sobbing and look up to see Sophie, Rick, and Carl all with their heads down. They all look grim. I set her down in a pile of autumn leaves. Her blonde hair fans out around her head like a halo. My angel finally got the halo she deserved. Her pale skin seems to shine even in death. Her bloody leg sticks out like a sore thumb. She got bit. My mission was to protect her and make her feel safe. And I failed. I feel as if she's dead because of me. I could have been there for her. Instead I was too focused on killing those GOD DAMN walkers. If I had focused more on her....maybe she would still be here.
Rick grabs my arm and pulls me up. Laken walks over to my Lainey and unsheathes her Bowie knife.
"NO!" I scream at the top of my lungs and try to pull away from Rick.
Laken kneels beside Lainey and covers her mouth. I see the blood, sweat, and tears glistening on her face. Rick pulls me out of view so I lose sight of my angel. I close my eyes and try not to imagine the knife entering her skull. Why did it have to end like this?
When I can finally see again, her corpse is covered by an off white sheet. Laken must've found it along the way. Her pale hand sticks out from underneath the sheet. I walk towards her and sit down. I wrap my fingers around hers and bring her palm up to my lips. I plant a soft kiss on it and quietly tuck it back under the sheet.
"I love you, Lainey. Always and Forever," I whisper softly and stand up.
I gather my things while the others say goodbye. We're about to start moving again when I take one last look at my dead lover and whisper a silent goodbye.
And then there were 4.
