It had been a few days since Violet, Klaus and Sunny had been brought in by Dr. Montgomery and the eldest two were getting ready for their first day at school and they were both rather estatic. They hadn't been to school before as their parents homeschooled them and when living with Count Olaf, they were too busy with cleaning his vile house to get a proper education.
Violet stood in front of a mirror in her room, dusting anything off the misty blue sleeves of her dress, with two pinky grey lines running round the cuffs. She was nervous, to say the least, she didn't dress like most girls. She didn't wear puffed sleeves with those apron things, she usually had her hair down, only ever putting it up when she was concentrating or inventing something, nor was her mind wasn't set on becoming a wife as she preferred to keep her focus on her inventions.
Taking a deep breath, she walked downstairs and into the dining room, to be greeted by her siblings and Dr. Montgomery - who were eating their breakfast.
"Ah! Violet!" Dr. Montgomery exclaimed as she sat down on one of the chairs, smiling to everyone who sat in the room, "Go on, eat up," Montgomery told Violet, "You're going to need your energy for school today, whilst Sunny and I are feeding the reptiles," He smiled.
Breakfast went by swiftly and, before they knew it, Violet and Klaus were waving goodbye to Sunny and Dr. Montgomery before heading off into the woods, on their way to school.
"You're nervous," Klaus noted as he watched his sister run her ribbon through her hands, a nervous tick she found herself consciously doing whenever she felt scared or anxious.
The word anxious often means very eager or concerned to do something or for something to happen.
But for Violet and Klaus, the word anxious meant feeling or showing worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome.
After a ten minute walk through what seemed like endless trees and leaves and conversations about future inventions to build and books to read, the Baudelaires made their way to the clearing outside of the school.
The two received odd looks from people as they slowly walked up to the door, maybe it was because they were new, maybe it was because Violet was the only sibling holding a rather large lunch basket and Klaus was holding an extra book in his hands.
The two took a deep breath before Klaus opened the door and the sounds of children laughing and shouting filled their ears.
"Well look what we have here," A rather annoying, high pitched voice drawled out and the two turned their heads to see a girl with auburn hair, somehow pinned into perfect curls, scowling at them with her arms crossed.
The room seemed to go silent and the Baudelaires took this small fraction of time to examine the small girl. She stood in a group primarily of blondes and brunettes and a girl with fascinatingly red hair standing on the side of them and Violet and Klaus tried their hardest not to cringe at the pinkness of the ringleader.
"Pardon me?" Klaus asked tentatively, sharing a look with his sister.
"It looks like we have more cake sniffing orphans in this school," The girl in pink snickered and Violet and Klaus began to shrink slightly under the gaze of their peers.
The girls around her - minus the redhead and one of the brunettes - began to laugh and so did some of the boys.
"Leave them alone, Carmelita," A boy said as he and a girl who looked like him stepped in front of the Baudelaires, "You're the cake-sniffer. Nobody in their right mind would want to talk to you anyway," He said and Carmelita walked away, emitting a high pitched 'hmph' sound.
"Come with us," The girl offered and the small group moved to the coat and hat pegs so that the Baudelaires could dispense of their non relevant items.
"You'll have to forgive Carmelita. She's so awful, Mr. Phillips was considering a life of crime. My sister wrote a poem about her," The boy said, glancing at his sibling.
"I would rather eat a bowl of vampire bats than spend an hour with Carmelita Spats," The girl recited as the four moved over to stand by one of the desks on the left side of the classroom.
"That's a couplet. William Shakespeare used them," Klaus realised, looking at the girl.
"I know. I've read all of his work," The girl replied, "I'm Isadora Quagmire, and this is my brother Duncan," The brunette introduced.
"I'm Violet Baudelaire, and this is my brother Klaus," Violet smiled at the pair.
"Nice to meet you," Duncan smiled back.
"What did Carmelita mean when she said 'more' orphans?" Klaus inquired and Duncan and Isadora shared looks.
"She meant us," Duncan said.
"You're orphans too?" Klaus asked.
"I'm so sorry," Violet told them softly.
"It's alright," Isadora smiled, "We moved here a few months ago and moved in with our Grandmother," She explained.
"We moved in with our 'Uncle' Monty," Klaus said, "I guess we have something in common then,"
"I guess," Isadora smiled slightly at him.
"I hope you don't mind my asking, but how did they die exactly?" Klaus asked cautiously.
"We lost our parents in a terrible fire," Isadora told them, "And our brother, Quigley," She added.
"We were triplets," The boy finished.
"We're sorry to hear that," Violet told them.
"We lost our parents in a fire as well," Klaus said, "It's not fair. One minute you're safe and happy and - home, and the next..."
"You're living in a house with a complete stranger who was supposedly best friends with your parents, but you've never even heard of them in your life," Violet finished and the group all shared looks of dismay.
"That girl over there, the one with the red hair," Isadora pointed, "She's an orphan too, she never knew her parents," The brunette explained.
"In a way, I guess she's lucky," Violet frowned slightly, as did the others.
