"you're the song that's stuck in my head"
stanley uris was always humming. it was rarely a song he'd heard of, as he wasn't really much of a music person himself. songs that richie always seemed to know were quite commonly stuck in his head. sometimes when he was home alone he would even sing quietly to these songs he didn't even know, but could sing all the lyrics to.
mackenzie rydinger loved music. she always had her headphones on, listening to a cassette tape in her walkman. it was like a 24/7 thing. she had a radio in her room that was always blasting the rock station, as well as a portable radio she carried with her pretty much everywhere. rock music was her favorite, but she enjoyed a lot of different genres.
it was rare for mackenzie to be caught humming a song that wasn't of her choosing, which she knew meant her soulmate wasn't a big music fan. sometimes though, she'd be sitting in class and slowly she'd realize some piano music was stuck in her head. that was always what it was. classical music, always soft sounding, piano usually.
stanley would sometimes ask richie if he knew the names of the songs stuck in his head because it made him feel closer to his soulmate. richie always knew, and richie told stan that his soulmate had good taste. richie was already a fan of them. that made stanley happy, you know, that richie liked his soulmate.
mackenzie was headed to the quarry today, as it was incredibly hot in old town, maine, where mackenzie lived. she rode to the next town over, derry, with her portable radio in the basket on her bike. mackenzie was playing the rock station as usual and humming to herself along with the songs.
stanley was swimming around the quarry with his friends, when he started humming a song he'd definitely had stuck in his head before. bill heard him humming and smiled.
"have you heard that song before?" he asked, swimming over to stan.
stan nodded, "yeah, definitely. she's probably listening to a radio." he commented.
"oh is stan's soulmate's listening to music?" richie asked excitedly, swimming over to bill and stanley.
bill nodded, "yeah, do you know the song?"
stan hummed along with the song and richie nodded excitedly.
"of course i know it! it's by kiss!" richie exclaimed with a bright smile.
stan laughed, "that band with the painted faces?"
richie nodded in reply, making stan laugh a bit more.
"wherever your soulmate is i hope she knows her taste is great." richie announced to the group before stan lightly shoved his shoulder.
mackenzie hit the brake on her bike and quickly hopped off. her bike hit the grass covered ground after she grabbed her radio from the basket. mackenzie heard some kids splashing and talking in the quarry, and she almost turned back, but decided they could share the lake.
she kept her radio blasting the kiss song it had been playing as she walked towards the rocky area right by the water. mackenzie wasn't a fan of heights, so she decided to enter the quarry from the bottom as opposed to jumping. her radio was at full volume, so as she approached the voices slowly died.
mackenzie entered the other kids' line of sight and smiled politely at them before sitting down on a rock.
"hope you don't mind if i swim with you." she commented, in an attempt to make things like awkward.
"what are you listening to?" a boy with curly hair asked with a shocked look.
"uh, my radio. it's the rock station." mackenzie replied after a moment of confusion.
"no i mean, what song?" he continued.
mackenzie shrugged, "some new song by kiss. i think it's called forever."
a different boy with thick glasses excitedly began hitting the other boy who talked's shoulder.
"that's it stan the man, that's the song!" the glasses boy whispered, but not very well.
"uh, am i missing something?" mackenzie asked slowly.
the song on the radio changed to some song by aerosmith and the first boy who talked began humming aloud, along to the song.
"oh you listen to aerosmith?" mackenzie asked with a smile.
he shook his head, "no, i really only listen to piano music."
that's when everything made sense to mackenzie. that boy and all his friends were surprised because she was listening to the song stuck in his head. and he knew the aerosmith song because she was listening to it. and he only listens to piano music, which is what mackenzie always hears.
mackenzie gasped and covered her mouth with her hands. the glasses boy quickly sprinted out of the water and hurried over to mackenzie.
"i'm richie tozier. pleasure to meet you baby. i've known stan the man over there since forever and let me be the first to say your music taste is amazing." he said in the span of a few seconds.
mackenzie giggled a bit, "thanks richie. so stan huh?" she asked, looking at the still shocked seeming curly haired boy in the quarry.
he nodded as he began walking out of the water and over to mackenzie.
"i'm mackenzie rydinger. it's great to meet you."
