Growing up

Children
Stare out of car windows
As the sun reflects shadows on their skin
And beyond the dust
Sprinkled on their window,
They see blue skies
And tall trees
And they imagine
endless roads of adventure
And there could be anything
around the corner
And the world is a rainbow

Parents
Sit in front, hands on the wheel
Squinting their weary eyes against the harsh light of the sun
And they know around the corner
Is another corner
The sky is a faded, dying blue
The trees don't provide enough shade
And they sigh and never imagine
anything different
Home is never close enough
And they wonder
When their world became so grey
