There was a buzz in the air of a mixture of dread and anticipation as I entered Courtroom 2. I had planned on showing up late but I needed time to gather myself and prepare so I was an hour early. Only the lawyers and a few of their assistants were present. I took a seat about three rows back from the front. I wanted to be somewhat close to see Eric but not too close. I was very thankful to know Dean was coming. My emotions were swirling in me and I had no idea how I would react to all of this. I patted my breast pocket again to make sure my notes were still there. Speaking at this would feel anticlimactic as no words could really express what I was feeling.

"Mr Emmerson?" One of the attorneys had made her way back and recognized me. She had her hand out. I took it and smiled.

"Yes, I am. Are you the DA?" I thought I recognized her face from television. Gabby Clooney was a bulldog. Her reputation was one of no mercy, no nonsense. Looking at her now I could see the hurricane behind the surface.

"Yes, I am Gabby. It's nice to meet you. Love your eyes. Those aren't the real color are they?"

"Yes, I have heterochromia. Kind of noticeable aren't they?"

"I say but they are amazing. I wish I had them. IT probably help sway a juror on the fence my way. I could hypnotize them with eyes like that." She sat down in the pew in front of me and got serious, "You up for this today. Its going to get your blood pressure up. I never expect scum like this to show any remorse. You still wanting to give a statement?"

"I have been trying to prepare myself. I have reinforcement coming to keep me level. Yes, I want Eric and the court to hear from me." She reached over and patted my leg and got up.

"Good, Hank. May I call you Hank? I expect zero surprises today but hearing from the victim's spouse tends to seal the deal. I see no way Mr. Luther will ever see the outside of a prison again." Everyone seemed to think Eric's severe punishment would be a blessing to me. Don't get me wrong, I didn't want him walking out free, but no amount of justice would bring me healing. I didn't even feel the justice was for Jess or myself but for society. They wouldn't want a guy like Eric on the loose. I didn't feel any comfort in wishing him suffering. I wasn't to where I could forgive him. I just didn't want to think or hear anything about him anymore. His name caused me pain.

"Thanks Gabby. Just let me know when it is my turn."

About half an hour later, the courtroom was full. The bailiff had brought Eric in. he was in an orange jumpsuit and shackled. He didn't look my way. I couldn't stop staring at him. He looked so small and harmless. There was nothing imposing about him. The only hint of his evil was his dead eyes and perpetual frown.

The Bailiff got everyone's attention to start: "All rise, The Court of Williamson County is now in session, the Honorable William B Sloan presiding
