Everyone had gone home. Except for me and Chip. We were sitting under a huge tree with its branches spread all over the place, providing shade to a very large extent.
Chip was talking to someone on the phone and I was sitting with my legs stretched in front of me.
I took out the picture from my pocket and brought it in front of my eyes.
Mom and Dad looked so happy. But where was I? And who is that boy? Their nephew? Their colleague's son? A family friend's son? Their neighbor's son whose family moved before I got to know them?
It can't be their nephew. It must be Vin or Andrew. But I have seen their childhood pictures. Its not them. Unless its....
Zachary?
Assuming my guess was right, I called him.
Zachary was dad's first brother's son. He was almost ten years elder to me. He wasn't around much as they had settled in Denmark even before Zachary was born.
"Hello?"
"Zach? soy yo Carmen Cómo estás?(Its me, Carmen. How you doin?)"
A small pause.
"Hey, Carmen. Estoy bien. Cómo estás?(I'm good. How are you?)"
"I'm good, Zach. Um..are you free now?"
"I have a conference in thirty minutes. Other than that, I'm free. What's up?"
"Okay. Don't worry, this isn't going to take long."
"Go on, I'm listening." He said.
"Um..so..I found this picture which fell off from dad's file and I want you to tell me who's in the picture when I send it."
"Uh...okay."
"I'll send it to you in five. Thanks, Zach."
"Anytime, Carmen. Oh, and I heard that you're in the music fest. Good luck, sis. Ask Vin and Andrew to cheer for you extra loudly from my side as well."
That brought a smile on my face.
"Thanks, Zach."
And then, I sent the picture to him.
Carmen:
I know that they're mom and dad.
Who's that boy?Ten minutes passed and no reply.
My phone pinged and I knew it was Zach.
But no.
My heart sunk to my toes and it picked up the pace.
Calvin:
Good luck, Caramel. I know you'll nail it.
I just didn't know what to reply.
Do I reply a 'thank you'?
Do I just seen zone him?
Why is it that I'm always clueless?
Just then, my notification panel displayed the message from Zach.
Zach:
I saw the picture. Actually I examined it.
I don't know who the kid is, Carmen. I'm so sorry. My heart broke even more.
I mean, when one bad thing happens, it leads to a series of bad things. Is it always like that? Or is it like that only for me?
