A day before my eighteenth birthday, we- Mom, Dad, Phoenix, Eloise and I- landed at the Perth Airport.
It wasn't that cold, but cool enough for me to keep my hoodie on.
"Welcome to Perth, Mom, Dad and Carmen." Phoenix welcomed us like some hotel manager.
Mom and Dad smiled.
"Thanks, Phoenix. It was very warm." I said, trying to sound Australian.
"An Australian already, are we?" Eloise questioned me playfully.
"Of course, Ma'am." I winked at her.
It wasn't easy to sit in the flight for seventeen hours straight. My butt already felt numb due to that and I was pretty much relieved to be walking to the exit gate on my legs. It was like a confirmation that my legs hadn't transformed into jiggly jelly.
Soon, Phoenix gave a ring to god knows who and within a few minutes, a silver Honda Mobilio pulled in front of us and a man of around late fifties hopped off the driver seat, making his way towards Phoenix.
He introduced us to the man, who was the part time driver for Phoenix and to me, he was one of the sweetest people I had ever encountered in my life.
Dad was in the passenger seat, Mom and Eloise in the middle seat, Phoenix and I were at the back, all to ourselves.
I took out my phone and started to take a small video of the streets of Perth when one of the most danceable songs started to play on the radio and I started to mouth the lyrics.
"Turn up the volume, Clarke!" Phoenix yelled from beside me at his driver.
I turned to look at him and all he did was give me that thousand watt smile of his.
"Sing along, Carmen!" He exclaimed.
Had to have high, high hopes for a living
shooting for the stars when I couldn't make a killing
didn't have a dime but I always had a vision
always had high, high hopes
Phoenix and I sang our hearts out and Eloise joined us as well. Both Phoenix and Eloise could sing. I hadn't been that happy and energetic in a very long time. It felt good to get back to my pavilion slowly.
Seeing the three of us sing, Mom and Dad were thrilled and they looked better. They were smiling more ever since we landed in Perth.
I was yet to talk to them. I was gathering all the courage I had in me to not break down in front of them when I talked to them, which was why I still hadn't talked to them.
If everything went according to the plan, which Phoenix and I had planned, things would fall into place. I swear.
Like Phoenix, I was hell bent on fixing things.

"You ready?" Phoenix whispered in my direction.
My family and I were then standing in front of a huge cabin door, made out of teak wood, I think.
On the door, there was a silver metal plate which had the names of the Waylon scientists. Phoenix had talked me into meeting them, especially on my eighteenth birthday.
Speaking of my eighteenth birthday, all my friends back home had wished me. Including Calvin. That jerk had the nerve to wish me even after the things he'd done to me. But me? I did not reply to his message. He was acting as if nothing had happened at all. But I was even better at the game he was playing with me. I acted as if I never knew him.
