saskia woke up to a pounding in the base of her skull. she immediately groaned and snuggled into carl's side to hide the sun's glare from illuminating the waters within her eyes.
"this sucks," she muttered, her words muffled by the cotton of carl's t-shirt. it was balled up in her fist tightly.
"i'm sorry, baby," he responded, running his fingers delicately through her hair. it had initially been styled into a messy bun the night before in anticipation of the morning's events but slowly begun to slip from the hair tie's hold. "are you nauseous at all today?" his words were soft, much like the calming rays spilling into the room.
"a little," saskia commented, rubbing the sparkle of sleep from her eyes. "not nearly as bad as yesterday, though."
carl took a breath and responded, "that's good." he took to rubbing his hand up and down her arm.
carl watched as his wife twisted the dainty ring around her finger with a slight smile dancing upon her face. the night he had proposed to her was pure magic. it was something carl had neglected to believe in after the world had ended, but never again did he doubt the existence of the feeling once he experienced saskia's face light up his universe when he was down on one knee, ring in hand.
"what's going on in that pretty little mind of yours?" carl questioned gently, relaxing into the pillows.
"about how we're going to tell our parents and sawyer," saskia acknowledged with a noticeable trace of apprehension in her tone. "what they'll say," she continued as she gazed at her wedding band before meeting carl's eyes, "we may only be nineteen, and i may have never been so frightened of anything in my life," carl's hand tightened around hers at this admission, "but i have also never been so sure."
"me neither," carl confirmed with a small smile as he leaned in and poured every ounce of feeling into kissing the love of his life. "i'm a little worried about sawyer, though. do you know how scared i was asking him and glenn for permission to propose? knocking you up? i'll be lucky if i live!"
"carl!" saskia deadpanned with her mouth wide open, but could not contain the giggle that escaped her mouth as she playfully struck his shoulder before pulling him into a hug. "don't say it that way either!"
"as much as i want to fall back asleep," saskia began wistfully after letting her laughter die down, "i promised maggie i would take hershel to the pool today and thought maybe jude could tag along," her statement ended in more of a question as she saw carl nod in agreement to her suggestion.
many of the houses located in alexandria had pools and during the summers after the war had ended and peace reigned, the citizens would hardly let them go to waste. blocks of chlorine were stored in the inventory after they had been found on a run and the fun was fostered in the community of survivors.
"i'll come, too," carl brought up, "my watch was cancelled for today."
"alright," saskia breathed out, "sounds good."
standing up proved difficult for saskia as black edged in and dotted her vision and she huffed, steadying herself on the post of the bed as carl watched on, concerned. he approached her, placing a hand on the small of her back.
