he was proud of her.

saskia ran down the lopsided trail as the pit deepened in her stomach, threatening to swallow her whole. her words had become weapons, and she had used them against the one person she vowed never to. saskia had not spoken since.

walkers were quickly filling in from behind and had begot the group to find a way out as they had left the deserted pet store moments earlier. saskia clutched onto her knife tightly as it threatened to slip between her blood ridden fingers. the fight out of the pet store had nearly cost them their lives. annie, however, had not been so lucky as her wounded ankle had caused her to fall into the clutches of walkers.

saskia felt no grief as the women's lifeline was cut by fate. it might have been an antiquated action of compartmentalizing, but saskia accepted it like an old friend. it was the only way she had learned to move forward without falling four steps behind first.

the sea of walkers around them pushed them in and there seemed to be no way out. saskia felt as though her head was being pushed under water and the oxygen was leaving her as it grew hard to think straight. overwhelming thought and emotion captivated her as she barely managed to stay afloat.

as they arrived at yet another dead end, saskia watched in confusion as michonne ushered everyone over. nonetheless, saskia picked up her feet in order to move over to the end of the fenced-off alley. heath helped michonne flip over a crate so that they could have a boost to manage themselves over the tall chain link fence.

"saskia, baby, you go first, okay?" michonne called out, yet kept her words gentle, as she caught saskia's gaze, "take any out on the other side."

saskia nodded and let heath help push her up so that she could get a better grip and climb up the fence. for a second, her hands slipped and she thought that it was the end, before david caught her foot and forced her back up with a nervous smile.

with a shaky breath, saskia swung her legs over the other side. instead of working out a way to climb back down the other side, she opted to free fall. perhaps it was not the smartest decision, but it was definitely the quickest.

as saskia fell through the air, she felt as though she was flying. if only for a second, the weight had been lifted from her chest. she was free.

saskia winced as her ankle dropped upon the dust a bit too harshly. she cursed under her breath, but pushed her hair from her face with her wrist, careful to not let her knife scratch her face.

"alright," saskia huffed as she scanned the other side, "i only see two," she finished as she ran out of their view for only a moment as she took out the lone walkers, ignoring the growing pain igniting in her ankle.

heath followed after the girl over the fence. he struggled to climb it at first, but finished strong as he collapsed upon the trash cans lined up on the other side. saskia adjusted her radio on her belt and blew a strand of hair from her face that had fallen in front of her eyes as she watched michonne and david climb up next.
