Chapter 5,
Scheming!
It was finally the weekend and Mom and I were going to head out soon to get me new shoes.
I couldn't wait.
I've been jittery since yesterday, wanting Saturday to hurry up and get here.
All this week since the first time I tripped I've been falling on my face and slipping and just over all adding to the bruise on my face.
Dad of course freaked out when he saw the bruise and found out who I was racing against. I thought he was going to go hunt down Ethan and give him a matching bruise, but Jack and Ricky stopped him saying he could lose his job as chief of police if he did that. And I assured him that it wasn't Ethan's fault.
"Jacklyn sweetheart, are you ready to go?" Mom asks me walking into the living room where I was sitting on the couch watching TV.
"Yeah." I reply standing.
Mom stays silent, looking me over for a moment before walking up to me and turning me around where she proceeds to put my long hair brunette hair up into a neat bun.
"That's better." She states with a nod, admiring her work.
"Feels cooler."
"Figures, now are we ready to go?"
"Yes." I say and with that we head to the van and get in.
Jack is watching the little ones so we don't have to bring Faith and Jaylee. At first he complained about it saying that there was no way he could watch all of them, but of course my counter was that if I could do it all by myself then so could he. He had no argument after that.
Plus, Ricky said he'd help watch them, after all, he is thirteen and old enough to help out.
Peter offered to help as well seeing as how he doesn't work on Saturdays and Sundays, but Dad told him not to worry about it that he should just relax on his day off.
However, if I know Pete, he'll be there when we get back.
Until then I can think of ways to set them up with each other.
"Hey Mom?"
"Yes dear?" She wonders, her eyes never leaving the road as she drives.
"If you had two friends who liked each other how would you set them up?" I ask, if anyone knew how to get two people together, it would be my mother.
"Well that depends on their personalities and what they like. Are we talking Jackson and Peter here?"
"Yeah, how'd you know?" Honestly I wasn't surprised, Mom is always so observitive.
"It's pretty obvious if you know Pete well enough. He even carries a compact mirror with him at all times." She answers with a small laugh, her eyes gazing straight ahead as we pull into the mall parking lot.
"He likes Jack." I say.
"And Jack likes him back." Mom adds in with a wide smile.
"They both like each other." I point out while Mom finds a parking spot and parks the van.
"One of them just need to man up and ask the other out already."
I laughed.
I couldn't help it, hearing Mom say that about her own son and my best friend was just so accurate.
