"Are we out of peanut butter?" I ask as I near the small food bank that we pulled down from the actual stock pile.
"I think we have a few more boxes in the stock pile." Steve answers, before glancing up "Do you want me to go get some?"
"No, I'll go get it." I sigh, before heading out of the lab and up the stairs to the food storage.
It's been another two weeks and I'm six months along. Contractions started last week and I've been craving peanut butter.
When I get to the stock pile, I find a stack of boxes. After picking one up, I start towards the stairs.
Two steps down, I slip.
The next few seconds happen too fast. I feel my weight tipping. Then, I feel the stairs hit my back, then my stomach, then my head, then my knee. Lastly, I land, stomach first, on the edge of the box.
For a second, I think I'm fine. Then, the pain hits and I see the blood spreading around me. A sob escapes my lips and I cry out for help. When Thanos, Steve and Tony run up, Steve's face goes white "What happened?"
I feel the tears slip from my eyes and I force myself to stand "The boys." I whisper as I desperately try to search for them.
"The blood." Tony realizes, before speaking louder "Guys, the blood!" I hear him through my haze.
"I can't feel them." I whisper, before the my mind feels something. It's Magni! "I need my sword." I insist, stumbling towards the lab, followed by the three.
When I finally reach my sword, the six surround me "You need to get to the medbed!" Gamora hisses.
"It's not going to help!" I state, before I fall on my knees, stabbing the sword into the ground. The portal fades burn marks into the ground as it opens "Go!" I scream.
Reluctantly, Nebula, M'Baku and Gamora step through. Tony, Steve and Thanos stay put. Steve screams "We're not leaving you here!"
"I said go!" I scream and lash out my power in pain, pushing Tony into the portal, while Thanos and Steve hold their ground.
Once Thanos regains his balance, he stocks over and uses my hand to pull the sword from the cement. When the portal goes down, Steve pants for air "I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm not leaving you here."
~
"Push!" Thanos insists as he sits in between my legs on the medbed "You're doing great, a few more pushes!"
I shake my head and rest it on the medbed "I can't do it!" I whine as I feel it rip "It hurts!" I sob "It hurts!"
"Just, ease up on the hand!" Steve hisses as I grip his hand with all my might.
"Are you pushing life out of your arse?" I growl as I start pushing again. He shakes his head apologetically "Then shut up about your hand!" I cry out in pain and throw my head back again.
"Okay, his head is out." Thanos nods "Just one more push."
With one more push, the first baby comes out. I get a glance of black hair and purple skin in the silence of the room. "Modi." I whisper under my breath as Thanos gives me a sad look.
After he snips the cord, he lays him on the table and few feet away, before returning and getting back into position "Push!"
After an extremely painful few minutes, Thanos catches the second baby in his hands. Soft blue skin with blonde locks. Norms, he looks like his father. "Magni." I whisper under my breath as he starts wailing.
When Thanos snips the cord, he starts towards the stairs. After Steve paws my stomach and helps me clear the afterbirth, I wave him off "Give me a moment with Modi. Go help Thanos."
With a nod, he's off and I'm alone in the room.
Alone with my stillborn babe.
When I know I'm alone, I stumble towards the computer and shut down the lab. The lights go off and the doors lock. An erie red light shines throughout the lab.
As I walk towards the table, a tear slides down my face "Oh Modi..." I smile weakly "How did you get so condemned to be my son?"
I lean forward on the table and let the tears out, closing my eyes. Something floats into me eyelids and I gasp "Sacrifice."
~
I lay the lifeless body in the middle of the circle and bow on my knees, placing my forehead to the cement "I give my sight for the life laying before me in this circle."
There's a bang at the door "Loki, let us in!" Steve orders.
"I give my sight for the life laying before me in this circle!" I plead.
"Shuri, unlock the door and give us eyes on the inside!" Thanos orders.
"I give my sight for the life laying before me in this circle!"
"Loki shut down the lab! I have to hack into mainframe to open the door!" Shuri screams into the earpiece.
"I give my s-" I stop when I hear a breath in front of me "Modi?" I ask as I ease up to look at him.
His purple skin is now dull and his eyes are black. He sits straight up and drool covers his lower lip as he growls.
I shake my head as a cry escapes my lips "No." I sob "No! No! No!" I plead as it starts crawling at me faster than it should be able to.
When it's inches away from me, I pick it up and hold it as far away as possible. It fights to get closer to me as tears blur my vision and I scream in heartbreak "What have I done?" I scream in agony as the doors to the lab slide open.
It scratches my arm and I drop it. It crawls to my leg and tries to bite me, but I kick it away, sobbing in agony. When it crawls back I feel for a weapon and stab him in the forehead with a dagger. Once. Twice. Thrice.
When the agony overpowers me, I collapse to the floor next to him and weep "I'm sorry, Modi! I so sorry!"
