Kenzie, Dylan, and Jake come to visit Sam, and she is conscious. Apparently Dylan and Alex fought, and both are amazing fighters. The fight lasted a really long time, and both fought their hardest the entire time, but eventually Alex knocked Dylan out.
“How many days do we have to fight each other?” Sam asks
“Two more, tomorrow you fight Khloe,” Jake says
“I’m really hungry, can we go to dinner?” Sam asks
Without any further discussion we all go to dining hall. Sam sits closer to me than normal as we eat.
Four walks in and makes an announcement “Everyone to the trains, we’re going on a field trip.”
They don’t even give us time to finish eating. I sit with Sam to my left and Kenzie, Dylan, and Jake sit across from us. There is no talking, just the sound of the wind as our train travels through our city. I can make out each of the factions as we pass it, Dauntless, then Candor, Erudite, and Abnegation.
I stare at the lights in the Abnegation houses, wondering how my father is dealing with my transfer. Sam takes my hand and gives it a soft squeeze, she must know its how hard it is to deal with this. The lights fade into the distance, looking like fireflies before the lights disappear altogether.
Then it’s the Amity sector, I don’t move my hand and Sam doesn’t pull away. I look over at her face as we pass the last few Amity houses. One tear escapes her eye and slides down her cheek. She leans her head against my shoulder and the single tear falls off of her cheek.
Uriah’s loud voice startles Sam out of my hand and off of my shoulder, they make teams. After everyone is chosen Four’s team consists of Jake, Kenzie, Joey, Khloe, a few dauntless born, and I. While Uriah’s team is Dylan, Ryan, Sam, Lynn, Alex, and some dauntless born. Tris and Christina pass out guns that shoot paint, and explain how to play capture the flag.
The team I’m on gets out of the train first and we head toward an old amusement park.
“Where should we hide it?” Jake asks
“Where did you hide it when you won?”Khloe asks Four and Tris
They look at each other before Four says “Now telling you wouldn’t be very fair now, would it?”
“We could put in in something,” Khloe says. I think she purposely talks just so she can hear herself.
I survey the amusement park, and notice an old ferris wheel in the distance. Four and Tris are watching me. She smiles, looks at Four, and then looks back at me. I can’t help but wonder what they are thinking.
“Where would an Erudite put it?” Khloe is still talking, and I can tell everyone is getting annoyed. “What about in a booth?”
I can’t take it anymore “Just shut up! No one wants to hear you talk!” Everyone is staring at me, “What? Everyone was thinking it.” I say to everyone, but nobody says anything so I just walk away.
I take the first step up the ferris wheel and I don’t even remember deciding to climb it.
“Will? What are you doing?” Kenzie says behind me, I didn’t even notice she followed me. When I don’t respond to her I hear her feet beginning to follow me up the structure of the ferris wheel.
I keep climbing. With every step I take, the higher I get, the more alive I feel. Before I know it I’m sitting on an old platform at the top, with Kenzie sitting next to me.
“So what are we doing up here?” Kenzie says shivering in the cold night air. I don’t say anything, not knowing what to say. “This doesn’t scare you? Being up so high?”
“No, it’s, almost a relief being up this high it’s relaxing,”
Kenzie slides closer to me “It’s cold up here.” I stand up and start climbing up the remaining structure. “What are you doing now?”
“It’s not high enough,” I say without looking down. When I get to the intersection of two bars I stand on the bar 100 feet above the ground.
Kenzie is standing on the bar next to me.
"Found it," I say finally being able to see the where the other team has hidden their flag.
"Where? What do you see?" Kenzie asks
We start climbing down, Kenzie right next to me, as I say "The flag, it's over by the marsh"
I look over at the distant lights wondering how my life would be different if I choose the lights that lead to an Abnegation life, picturing I would be doing right now if I didn’t go down this path.
A shriek and a clattering bar shake me out of my daydream.
“Will!” Kenzie screams hanging on a bar with another just out of her reach. “Will!” She screams again.
I work my way over to her as fast as I can without falling, keeping in mind that if I fall there isn’t anyone to save her.
“Will! I’m slipping! Help!”
I can’t believe nobody has heard her screaming and come to help. I reach her just as her hands are slipping off the bar, barely grabbing her hand before she falls to the ground. I pull her onto the bar I'm on, hoping the bar holds.
I can see her shaking. I pull her into my arms, comforting her just as I do with Sam. Tears are still on her cheeks as we work our way down the structure.
“Where have yo,” Khloe starts to say before I interrupt her
“While you were all just sitting around doing nothing Kenzie and I were scoping out the competition.”
“Wait, so you climbed the ferris wheel to find where Uriah’s team hid their flag” Four says looking at Tris.
I smile looking at Kenzie then I say “It’s in the marsh, under the bridge.”
We move out I lead half of our team to capture the flag and Kenzie leads the other half of our team to lead Uriah’s team away from us. I can see the flag only 50 yards away. I hear Kenzie’s group fire on the guards. 2 of the 4 chase after Kenzie while Jake, Joey, and I charge in to get the flag.
As we get closer I see that it’s Dylan and Ryan that are standing, unsuspecting the ambush. Jake takes Dylan out before he even knows what is happening, but Ryan manages to take both Joey and Jake out. Now it just me and Ryan.
I roll under the bridge, dodging the paintballs being shot in my direction. I hear paintballs whizzing past my ears, just missing me.
I’m only about 20 yards away when I realize I’m not shooting back at them. At that realization I reciprocate the paintballs flying in my directions back at Ryan.
It’s Ryan that runs out of ammo first. He dodges my shots until I’m out too, then it’s hand to hand combat.
I throw the first punch, right to his jaw. He stumbles back holding his jaw. I take the opportunity to kick him in the crotch, and he falls to his knees. I try to slide past him but he grabs my leg out from under me. I hit the ground hard, and am bairly able to get up. But I summon all my strength and push my body up before Ryan can throw another punch.
It has to end, now. I avoide a blow to the head that would have demolished my hopes of winning this for my team. I kick him in the gut once to ensure that he doesn't get up.
Using Ryan and a step stool I grab onto the underside of the bridge. He swipes at my legs, now dangling at his head height, but only manages to get a swift kick to the head knocking him down long enough for me to grab the flag.
I did it! We won, because of me!
