No. No. No.

I tried to avoid green dresses at all costs as I searched through the racks. There was nothing jumping out at me. Lily and Debra were giddy as we shopped around the best dress store in town. Susie’s Silhouettes was the premiere, but affordable all occasion dress shop that we had here in town.

“So your mom showed up last night, bet that was fun.” Lily said sarcastically. Lily knew more about my pitiful relationship with my mother more than Debra did as she has seen it firsthand.

“Yeah she’s going to try and take me back east because she doesn’t approve of Nathan being in the same house.”

“No.” They both said dramatically. I just nodded with that expression of agreement and drama on my face.

“She tried to slap me.” Debra raised an eyebrow and lily looked horrified.

“No way.”

“Well I dumped her Prada purse into the washing machine.” I said with a giggle. They both doubled over with laughter.

“Yes I would have slapped you for that too.” Debra chimed in jokingly. I smiled; friends and retail therapy were always wonderful.

My dad had given both Nathan and I money this morning when we told him we were going to the dance. I didn’t say we were going together. Just that we were both going and Nathan didn’t disagree either. So we both had almost two hundred dollars to play with. My dad had gotten a raise since joining this program plus money for Nathan’s needs from the county so he let us indulge. I am sure part of it was because of last night.

The sensation of Nathan holding me as I fell asleep, speaking of last night, sprang back into my mind. The warmth pulled in my chest at how good it felt. Nathan had come with us to shop much to Lily and Debra’s delight and to my annoyed embarrassment. He had taken off on his own though, so I didn’t have to worry about him being close by so I could have some girl time with my friends.

“Dawn how about this?” Lily said snapping me out of my thoughts. She was holding up a sapphire blue sleeveless clingy dress, the material rippling as she twirled around and held it up to her figure. Blue always looked great on Lily.

“Try it on so we can see.” Debra had picked out a deep crimson almost blood red dress, with a plunging neck line and chiffon material. Her color was definitely a scarlet one. Her hair was red now even though she started the school year with purple.

They waited while I searched. Green, green, green! The bastard had me unable to think of any other color. Gazing around losing hope I saw it, it stood out like it had a halo over it calling me. I sighed, it was green.

The dress has a hoop around the neck sleeve leaving my back bare, with some circular pearl design type beading at the waist and the neckline low but not overly plunging. My bust would certainly pop in this and the skirt flowed with a light almost sheer material that came down just a few inches above my knee. The dress would definitely show off my legs. The color was a light emerald green and it would definitely bring out the hazel in my eyes.

“Okay I found something.” I called to them.

“I thought you said strictly no green?” Debra observed confused. I hadn’t told them the reason why.

“Yeah I guess I changed my mind.” I tried to sound casual as we walked back to the dressing rooms each taking a cubicle.

“Okay girl beans spilling time.” Lily called. The rustle of material and zippers echoed through the walls.

“Are we alone?” I asked.

“Anyone else changing?” Debra hollered and I rolled my eyes at her boldness, but no one answered.
