One Month Later

“Are you going to the dance?” Debra asked me. A month had passed since my suspension.
I had gotten all my chores done that my father ordered on time and he was very pleased with the results especially the garage. Nathan had helped me with that one when my dad wasn’t home. We had some fun conversation and had gotten to know each other on Sunday from that.
Things had settled down and I was pleased with myself for managing to keep the peace with Nathan and not give anything away, just barely though. My dad was more tired than usual. I think it was the fact that my dad and Nathan had a few arguments over his parents and I was able to start piecing bits of the puzzle together.
They always shut down when I popped into the room though. Nathan seemed to be keeping his distance as well. Something was wrong, but I didn’t push the issue. I was still confused and working through my own feelings.
School has been difficult. Penny had it out for me. She always tried to get me angry, but only in front of people now. I knew she was plotting some kind of revenge. I was enjoying her frustration as it was easier now that I had gotten that one eruption out of the way to keep calm when she antagonized me.
Nathan of course was being more flirtatious with some of the other girls that followed him around which made me angry. I spent as much free time as I could with Lily and Debra just so I didn’t have any episodes of weakness or alone time with Nathan. I was afraid of how he made me feel.
“Not yet no one has asked me.” I replied when Debra nudged me out of my thoughts. Besides the dance was still two weeks away.
“I figured you would go with Nathan.” Lily said flippantly, her pony tail bobbing as bubbly as her personality, I scoffed at her.
“Are you serious? We barely ever talk as it is now.” My voice had a scathing tone. I did talk to Nathan at home quite a bit. They didn’t need to know that. We had gotten to know each other little by little.
At least keeping my distance and being civil had gotten me that far. I had figured out that he was not just some street smart delinquent, he had a brain. He was observant, he could always tell when something was bothering me from the way I tapped my foot. I always knew when he was closing up on me with his sarcastic commentary. His favorite color was green.
“Yes serious it is not hard to see that you both like each other.” Debra retorted in that bored tone of hers. I just stared at her. She was usually only concerned with what she wanted. My heart still fluttered warmly that she said we both liked each other. I didn’t say anything though and ate my lunch.
“See.” Debra clucked smiling at me.
“How could you even tell that?” My question muffled with a mouthful of salad. Both Lily and Debra snorted laughing.
“That is all you talk about, others might not see it but we being your better halves see it in every subject we discuss somehow you always have a Nathan comment, that means only one thing.” Lily piped in.
“I do not.” I snapped. They both laughed, and proceeded to tease me.
“Yeah I had to help Nathan with that assignment.”
“Nathan made fun of that book.”
“Nathan likes that band.”
“Don’t remind me Nathan teases me about my foot tapping.”
They were giggling and making gestures of how I wave my hands around, tap my foot, and clutching at my heart. I looked back and forth between my friends fuming.
