It had been two days since Daisy’s outburst and she hadn’t left her room at all. She’d placed her hair in a messy bun on the top of her with a green stretchy headband and wore her pyjamas all day everyday only changing when she showered. Her parents or Lindsay brought her food regularly, but it remained untouched on the bedside cabinet until they brought the next meal and she passed them the previous meal back.

She realised that if she went downstairs to see her family, she couldn’t guarantee the ‘no outburst’ promise she’d made them, so she just didn’t. She was angry. How could the Army let her husband die? How could they just waltz in here, tell her that Brandon was dead, and then waltz back out again. She knew one thing for sure. None of that lot were making their way into Brandon’s funeral. Not. A. Chance.

And that’s what she was doing now. She was sat in her bedroom, which had been cleared from the other night, and her teddies were back on her bed after being retrieved from the back garden, and she was planning the funeral. Her family had offered their help, and the army had offered their services, but she didn’t need help. Hell, she didn’t want help. She could do it all by herself and that was what she was going to do. She didn’t have a lot of money, but she was determined to give him the best send-off she could.

In just two days, she’d ordered the flowers, picked the coffin she wanted, the headstone and writing to be on it, phoned the vicar and ordered food for the Reception. Now, there was only one problem. It cost more money than she’d ever had in her life. Oh well, she thought, she’ll sort that minor setback out later.

With that, her phone, which had been sat on the bedside cabinet, beeped. She didn’t need to look to know who it was from. It would be Jade. She was having her twelve week scan today and was receiving texts galore asking how she was. She never answered a single one. Picking her phone up she read through the messages.

Jade: Hey, Hon. You okay? Got my scan today, thought you might like to come?

Jade: It’s at the hospital at 10am, if you want to come, be there at about half 9.

Jade: You’re not here, so I’ll go in now. Hope you’re okay.

Jade: Baby’s doing fine. I got a picture, I’ll come round and show you if you’re in?

Daisy sighed, threw the phone back on the table, and lay back on the bed.

A few moments later, she heard the front doorbell ring and a commotion of cries and shouts downstairs. She walked to her bedroom door and peeped through as she saw someone bounding up the stairs. She didn’t wait to see who it was before jumping back into bed under the covers.

Everything went quiet and Daisy could only hear the sound of her heartbeat pounding in her chest. A few moments passed and then BANG! Her bedroom door flew off its hinges and half way across the room. She jumped up and looked at her parents, Lindsay and the strange man stood in her doorway. It was clear that it was the man who had bust the door down.

The man looked at Daisy and was gobsmacked. He couldn’t believe how beautiful she’d turned out. Her long blonde hair was slightly shorter than when he’d last seen her, but still fell way past her shoulders. Her hazel eyes still as piercing as the day he left.

They were also bloodshot from all the crying. He could see the torment in her eyes, the sleepless nights getting to her. And he thought that although she was pretty, she looked older than her nineteen years.

He watched as Daisy jumped out of her bed and launched herself at him, lifting her arm back to punch him. A small smile crept on his face as he grabbed her arm before she hit him. She had a good aim and could stick up for herself. Where had she learned that?
