Daisy ended the call and threw her phone back onto the dashboard with tears in her eyes. Seven months. Seven whole, very long, painful months she had spent waiting to hear that voice again. Was she dreaming? Was she hearing things? Was it all a figment of her imagination? The voice had sounded strained and painful, yet she’d heard a slight smile as the word was spoken. That beautiful voice.
“What the hell was that?” Jade queried as she glanced over to her friend, immediately noticing her tears. “Who was on the phone?”
Daisy wasn’t sure she should mention this to her. Hell, she wasn’t even sure if it was all in her head. Had she really heard that voice or had her mind been playing tricks on her? Tears were streaming down her face; the frustration causing her upset.
“It was-” The vibration of the phone again cut her off. She just stared at the screen as it lit up and then went dark, then lit up again in a flashing motion.
“Are you gonna answer that?” Jade pointed to the phone briefly as she struggled to concentrate on the road, being more concerned for her friend’s sudden change in behaviour.
“I-I-” Daisy stuttered, unable to form the words that she wanted to speak. “N-no.” she shook her head decisively.
“Fine. I will.” Jade grumbled and pulled the car over to the side of the road again before she reached over and picked up the phone. “Hello?” she asked confusedly. There was silence as she listened into the receiver and the person on the other end spoke, and then she turned to Daisy and gave her a stern look. “Why did you put the phone down on Lee?” she asked her.
“Lee? But, it-”
Daisy knew that the person on the phone when she answered the second time was not Lee. She knew Lee’s voice. She also knew Brandon’s; both very distinctive and different voices. There was no way she was going to explain this to Jade. Brandon was dead, right?
“Well?” Jade asked wondering what the hell was going on in Daisy’s mind right now.
“Sorry. I’ll…yeah, just pass me the phone.” She sighed before putting the receiver to her ear. “Hey, sorry about cutting you off. Did you say anything before it went dead?”
“Hey, yeah I said ‘Daisy’. Why, what’s wrong?”
“Did I happen to call you a creep by any chance?” she asked nervously, slightly hoping that she was wrong and was hearing things.
Lee laughed. “No, why would you? Do you think I’m a creep?”
“No, not at all, I’ve just been having some funny phone calls lately.” She admitted. “I had one after your call. Are you sure you didn’t call twice?” she asked again.
“No, just the once. I tried again and the line was busy.”
“Oh, well, I’m sorry, I didn’t hear you; there must have been something wrong with the line.”
Lee could hear the distraught in her voice and was tempted to ask her what was wrong so he could at least attempt to help her, but he wasn’t sure whether she would tell him. He reluctantly kept quiet, deciding that if she wanted him to know, she would tell him in her own good time. However, that didn’t stop the jealousy from running through his veins and it certainly didn’t stop the feeling of doubt coursing through him; doubt over whether she trusted him enough.
“Yeah, maybe.” He mumbled unsurely. “Well, I called ‘cause I was wondering if you wanted me to bring anything tonight?”
Daisy thought for a moment. “A bottle of wine is always welcome, or some beers if you wish? You choose, I’m sure whatever it is, it’ll go down a storm.” In all honesty, she didn’t know what anyone drank. She’d always provided wine before anything else at other parties therefore that had been the norm.
