Standing in front of her dressing table, Daisy wondered what she should wear for this…’just as friends’ date. Deciding she shouldn’t wear anything too revealing, she started towards her wardrobe when her reflection in the mirror caught her eye and she turned to study it.

In front of her stood a girl she barely recognised in black bra and pants. Her skin was pale with dark circles under her eyes and her hair was lifeless, clinging to her head.

She remembered the last time she’d taken her time to look at herself in the mirror; the day that Brandon was meant to come back and that day, she’d thought that she couldn’t possibly look any worse having been without her husband for six months; yet here she was, looking worse than she could ever have imagined.

This is it.  She made a resolution to herself right then and there. A resolution to cheer up, to start taking better care of herself, and to start enjoying life. Brandon may be gone, but that didn’t mean that her life had to end. She was still young and as much as her heart broke to think it, she was free and single. That wasn’t to say that she was going to pounce on the first bloke to take an interest. No, she wasn’t ready for that. However, if a date with a friend was something that would cheer her up, then why not?

Continuing to her wardrobe, she pulled out a red dress that came down to her knees, with a V neckline and was tied behind the neck. Around the waist was a black strip that managed to accentuate her curves. Topping the outfit off, she slipped into some three inch black heels and stood up to admire herself in the mirror once more.

“Twit twoo.” Luke’s voice behind her made her jump and she turned to see both he and Lindsay stood at her door, with arms crossed over their chests. A blush crept on her face as she attempted to cover herself, feeling naked to be dressed like this in front of her siblings. “And where do you think you’re going like this?” He waved his hand in front of him gesturing to the dress.

“I’ve um, do you remember Lee? From last week?” she asked warily, anticipating his reply. She had a feeling that he wasn’t going to be happy. “He was at the graveyard after the funeral.”

“Yeah, what about him? You’re not going out on a date with him, are you?” he asked, pulling a look of disgust. “Please tell me you’re not.” He raised his left hand and ran it through his hair and down to his neck in frustration.

“No, it’s not like that, it’s really not. He asked if I wanted to go out for a few drinks and I said yeah.”

Lindsay just nodded, however Daisy could see that Luke was holding back.

“Just as friends, though.” She clarified – as if that would make a difference to Luke.

He was furious and unable to understand how she would be able to even consider another man so soon after her husband’s death.

Then there was the whole Kurt situation. Kurt had gone downstairs and told Luke everything that had happened between them in her bedroom earlier that day and he couldn’t understand that either. One dead husband, one friend whom she clearly has feelings for, yet is going for ‘drinks’ with another man? He just didn’t understand the way this girl’s head worked.

“Oh, so you flip when Kurt, one of your best friends even touches your waist, yet you’re willing to go out on a date with another man? A man whom you barely know? A man five years your senior?” He fumed.

“I told you. I told you it’s just as friends. And I resent that you think I barely know him. I’ve known him for a long time; we just lost contact after school. Plus he knew Brandon. As much as I don’t like it, Brandon’s gone and if I can spend time with anyone who knew him, maybe I’ll feel closer to him. What’s so wrong about that?”
