Alex's POV
"What are we going to do?"I let Zayn's question hang in the air as I folded my hands over my chest. The ground felt hard under the tents thin floor, but at least we had something separating us and the wilderness. Although, we never had problems with the animals before. They must know we're different too.
"About what," I asked back, "our parents or Aunt Carol? Do you really trust her? Or am I the only one that's suspicious of her?"
Zayn sighed as he sat up grabbing his thin blanket from his bag. Well, at least Aunt Carol had one good idea.
"Be honest Alex. Do you even trust me? I don't trust anybody. I say when we get out of this war we leave. We take Lynn, Sammy, and Thomas and leave."
I grabbed the flashlight Zayn was using to look through his bag and put it between us, so that we could see each other as we spoke. I think this conversation is going to last for a while.
I looked Zayn in the eye before saying, "You're right I don't trust anybody either. But I think right now we need to trust each other. We can get over our problems later, if there is a later. I don't want to die not trusting anybody. Theo might be dead but at least he died loving somebody. Drew died alone. We all like to pretend that he didn't, but we still didn't trust him. I don't want that."
Zayn looked surprised at what I said and to be honest I was too.
"I don't wanna talk about death right now. Let's talk about something useful," Zayn said running his hair through his very tangled hair.
I grabbed my blanket as well starting to get a bit cold. After all it's raining outside. Zayn and I thought it would be a good idea not to change the natural weather because that would confuse the surrounding animals. We did it on a few occasions anyway but today we let it rain.
I nodded before saying, "I agree," I thought for a moment before asking, "what do you think about Aunt Carol's plan for the bugs?"
Zayn let out a laugh before replying, "I think she's insane. How can we possibly use Lynn's bracelet to identify all of the people with the bugs? I know she's trying to be careful of inside spy's but how do we know she isn't one herself?"
"We know that because she is literally the leader off the good side. We may not agree with all of her decisions. Well? most of them. But some of them have been for the good of us all, haven't they?
Zayn didn't answer but instead looked at me with an, angry expression? What's he thinking about?
"Haven't they Zayn? What's wrong with you? Answer me," with that I grabbed Zayn shoulders.
Zayn pushed my hands off of him looking angry and hurt? What the heck is going on here?
"What's wrong with me is that innocent people shouldn't die!" Zayn yelled standing up and bursting through the tent opening.
Zayn's outburst surprised me based on his prior demeanor. He never cared about this before, did he? He was evil, what changed? He didn't care about anybody and now he does?
I ran after Zayn, not giving up on him this time. I followed him through the woods, all the way to the river. The rushing water was calming, but the rain falling on me made me agitated.
