Samantha's POV

Okay so I'm laying in the middle of a jungle in God knows where after having a dream about a disembodied head. Hm, that's no reason to freak out, is it? Just as I thought that I heard a twig snap loudly behind me. Just great, I thought! I could be at home snuggled up in a blanket on the couch reading my brand new book but instead, I'm out here in the middle of the jungle about to be brutally murdered by a stranger! Yeah, I'm living the American dream!

"HELLO?" I heard an oddly young sounding voice call out, "Dad are you out there I'm scared?!" I heard the voice call out again, only this time the voice sounded terrified as if the major shock of being in the jungle had just settled in. The rustling sound got louder as the figure that I presumed to be a young child got closer to me.

What should I do? Was the thought that was running through my head. Should I help him? He sounds terrified and very lost. But better yet so I am I. Or maybe I should shift to blend in with my surroundings just in case this is a psycho murderer disguising his voice with that of a child. I emitted a sigh of frustration and immediately regretted it as the shuffling got louder.

"Hello, anybody there?" The childlike voice yelled again. I could hear that he was just as frustrated as I was by the tone of his voice, so I decided to take a leap of faith and yell back to him.

"Yeah!" I yelled as I backed up against a tree just in case I needed to do some last minute shifting. "I'm over here!"

The rustling kept increasing in sound until I could practically hear it right beside me. Then, before I could even move a muscle, I was flipped onto my back and groaning in pain as I brought myself to look at the figure looming over me. As my eyes flitted open I saw a boy no older than eight standing over me. That couldn't be right, I mean how could such a small child have that much strength? Unless... no, forget it, that can't be true. As I reluctantly propped myself up I asked: "What was that for?"

"Well," he said as if choosing his next words carefully, "You kind of scared me, so I just kinda, and then you..."

"Yeah I get it," I muttered slowly standing " My little sister would have done the same thing. Well minus the flipping me over part, that really hurt!" I said rubbing my head slowly as if I had just suffered collateral brain damage.

"Sorry!" He squeaked looking terrified at what I might do to him next. I mean if anything I should be terrified of him, not the other way around!

"Don't worry about it!" I commented squatting down to his side, " I would never hurt a little cutie like you!" He was so adorable with his light brown hair messy flying everywhere. Plus his ocean-like blues eyes could melt my heart any day! Although, he looked pretty dirty and his clothes were quite torn. I couldn't help wondering what this poor little guy had gone through!

"Mommy would have." He muttered as his eyes resorted to staring at the ground and his tattered shoes above it.

What did he mean by that? What kind of person would hurt a poor innocent little kid like the one standing before me? Like I mean sure my parents were pretty messed up from what I've heard being adopted in all, but obviously, my life wasn't nearly as bad as his. "What do you mean?" I asked finally ending my curiosity.

"Well," he stated looking reluctant, " when mommy would get angry she would hit me and call me names. She would also say that I was dangerous and bad just like daddy." As he said this tears started to stream down his dirt-streaked face. That monster doesn't deserve to be called a mother!

I pulled him into a big bear hug like I would have done to my little sister. I tried to calm him by saying soothing words and wiping his tears away.

He slowly regained composer and once he was sobered up he studied me with a confused expression on his little face. "What?" I asked clearly confused as well.

"What is your name?" he asked looking me straight in the eyes as if trying to figure it out on his own.

"Oh," I gasped " I completely forgot to tell you! My name is Samantha but you can call me Sammy."

He looked at me with a grin on his face as he remarked, "I'm Thomas!" As those words left his mouth I broke out into a wild grin, this kid was just so cute!

"You know what?" He asked looking at me intensely as if he was about to tell me a bigger secret than the one he had just told me.

"Hm, I don't know? What?" I asked dying to know what this little guy had on his mind.

"Well since you're really nice and I know your name now, I think you are my best friend!" he declared like he had just won the lottery.

I giggled as he did a sort of victory dance in a circle. "You know," I said through my laughter, "I think that is a great idea!"

He then pumped his fist in the air and started to run around chanting, "I have a best friend! The bestest of best friends!" I then thought; what the heck? I jumped next to him and grabbed his shoulders forming a sort of conga line chanting with him. This kid reminded me so much of my little sister. Well, she really isn't my sister since I'm adopted in all but I still loved her like one.

We finally stopped doing whatever the heck we were doing before to sit down and rest for a minute. But really I was trying to figure out why this kid and I had ended up in the middle of the jungle, and how we were going to get out of this place. After some much-needed information from Thomas, I found out he had been grabbing batteries for his flashlight after the blackout had started when all of the sudden he just fainted. He had the same dream I had, and then just ended up here. Just as I was about to ask him another question I hear a very loud thud followed by several fits a laughter.

"Did you hear that?" Thomas asked once again looking terrified.

"Yeah," I answered feeling worried and relieved at the same time by some other possibly human, or in my case not-so-human, presence.

"Should we go and see who it is?" he questioned naively while looking towards the source of the thud.

Probably making the dumbest and the rashest decision of life, I turned to him and dumbly said "yeah," while starting to trek towards the murmuring of voices.
