POV: Kurt

Walking down the halls of Dalton, I felt a rush of fear. Luckily it was during class so none of the students were in the halls, leaving them empty and silent. Despite my relief that nobody was there, it filled me with an ominous feeling.

I stayed by my father's side, close enough that I won't get lost but far enough to not be too close.

My eyes darted around the halls, observing and processing where the nearest exits are. So far I hadn't seen many, which worried me— what if I needed to escape?

After walking for what seemed like a lifetime, my father and I stopped at the Headmaster's office.

"Come in," a voice called from inside, taking me aback for a moment so that I almost forget my current situation— almost, mind you.

As they enter the office, my suspicion is confirmed— the Headmaster is, in fact, a woman. This may seem weird to some, but to me it made perfect sense. Sometimes the only way to keep a group of rowdy boys in check is with a woman's touch.

I was glad she was, well, a she, because I always found myself more comfortable— that is to say, less on edge— around females. I'm always on edge.

The Headmaster had a professional manner and warm smile that reached to her eyes, one that I could tell made many students feel safe and comfortable telling her anything. Although I wasn't about to divulge my darkest secrets, I could definitely see how she got this position.

I snapped out of my thoughts, realizing that my father and the Headmaster were finished talking.

"Well, Kurt," she said, "one of our students should be out here shortly to show you to your dorm and give you a tour. As you still need to settle in, you have today off of your classes to get your bearings. I am certain you will love it here, and I will do everything in my power to make sure you feel safe here at Dalton."

I tried to smile and nodded gratefully, showing her I understood. I haven't spoken much since the accident. Well, the incident. It certainly wasn't an accident.

Snap out of it, I scolded myself. You need to stay strong and thinking about that won't help.

"Oh, I almost forgot to mention— the boy showing you around is also your new roommate," the Headmaster added.

I nodded numbly. Great, I'm interrupting his classes and he's being forced to show me around. There's no way he won't hate me now.

My father and I walked out of the office, and he said his rather tearful goodbye before he headed back to Lima. I turned around and before I knew it, a blonde boy was standing in front of me. I almost jumped, startled.

"Hi!" he said energetically. "You must be Kurt— I'm Jeff, your new roommate!"

Oh boy. He's a talker.
