Chapter 7
I stood on the doorstep of the pack house, intensely aware of the fact that everyone must be asleep but still convinced I made the right decision in coming here so fast. I had a feeling these guys would be a lot more prepared for me in the morning. Honestly though, I didn't want them knowing I was back yet, it could buy us time.
I stared down at my clothes to see the oversized shirt and sweatpants Malcolm had given me and silently thanked him for his kindness. If I hadn't found him in the woods he'd probably still be looking for me. I knew how to cover my tracks, just as I knew that I only had a few more minutes before one of the sentries would come to arrest me.
Two of them were watching me with keen eyes to see if I was going to attack or knock on the front door for entrance. Sighing, I glanced over my shoulder at the two wolves hidden in the dark.
I looked up at the large house before shrugging and instead of knocking to enter, I picked the lock.
It was something my father thought might come in handy some day.
Pretending to knock, I stepped into the house a few seconds later and became a blur of movement. I ran through the house following my grandmother's sweet perfume scent until I came to her door and stepped inside.
I was a little confused when I found the dark form of Zane seated in a chair beside the bed with his eyes closed and his chin resting on his chest. Deciding not to think about him, I silently moved towards the other side of the bend and allowed myself the first glance at my grandmother since the night she broke our family bond.
Honestly, I couldn't really blame her. I was weak and anyone would be stupid to admit you were bonded to the weakest person alive but it didn't make it hurt any less.
I stared down at the woman sleeping in bed, her heart was slowly starting to give in and I knew I'd arrived at the right time. It wasn't long now before she'd be gone so I slowly lowered myself to my knees and rested my head on my arms. I slowly assessed her condition.
Both her arms were wrapped up and there was a bandage over one of her eyes. Her legs were in casts and she looked a little thinner than when I last saw her. They certainly did a number on her and as much as I know about healing, I knew from experience that we heal faster than the normal human being. Even so, scars remain and if the injury is too fatal, it will not be enough to just heal fast.
Our wolf is weakened and we either remain weak or we pass on. In this case, my grandmother was passing on and it was only because of the hit she got to her chest. Our heart is the most precious thing in our entire body and injuring it is very close to killing you.
I looked up at Zane once more and was thankful that he seemed to be a deep sleeper. This way, he wouldn't hear me talking to my grandmother but it was the waking up part that I was scared of.
If I really changed so much that she wouldn't recognize me, she could overreact and alert everyone in the house or I might be the cause of her death before her heart gave in.
I slowly reached over and placed my hand right above her mouth before reaching out with my other hand to slightly shake her shoulder.
She seemed to struggle to wake up but when her eyes focused on me and her mouth opened, I placed my hand firmly over her lips. I cut off her scream before it could even start and placed a finger to my lips, then gestured towards Zane while her eyes remained wide open in fear. When she realized I was going to let her go if she promised to be silent, she nodded and seemed to pull herself together. She was doing exactly what I knew she would do. She did the same thing a week after I told her, her son had passed away. The only time I heard anyone noticing her sorrow was when Belle told me she would stare out the window in thought but it would only last a few minutes. Her smile would return and she'd go on as if nothing happened.
