ALYSON’S POV

“Is it really that hard?” Sat  my peppy old friend Kay on the couch next to me. “Oh,” Ross smiled, “We have a visitor,” He sighed. “Hey Ross, nice to see you again,” She said, nodding to him and turning her attention back to me. After talking to her for a little while I had realized she had changed quite a bit. She actually asked about my life and my engagement and didn’t focus all of her energy on herself. Rocky came down stairs and stopped mid-walk, “Kay, surprised to see you here!” He said, looking at me with desperate eyes as if to ask me why she was here. “I wanted to meet my friend’s baby!” She squealed, “But she’s sleeping.” She slumped down in her seat and glared at me.

“I’m not waking her up so you can see her, the more she sleeps the better!” I laughed. “But seriously,” I said to her, “It really is a tough job.” “Oh my god,” She said, “And to think I almost had to go through that,” “wait what?” Ross asked, looking at me and then Rocky, “Kay,” He turned to her, “You what?” She looked at me and my face was beet red, we hadn’t told the family about Riker and her. “Um,” I said, hearing the baby monitor beep and crying, “Baby!” I said, hopping up and taking Kay with me. I grabbed her arm and drug her up the stairs.

“You guys never told them about that!” She whispered to me once we were up the stairs, “Well, yeah, no, we figured it was something you would want to forget, plus Riker had a girlfriend and,” “What?” She asked, looking upset. “Yeah,” I shook my head, “He dated this girl for a while, but they broke it off I think, some stuff happened,” I said, opening the door to my baby girl’s room. “Hi Kadie,” I smiled, picking her up and setting her on her changing table.

Kay looked at the tiny baby and smiled, “She’s so small,” She whispered. After a couple minutes of silence I turned to see if she was okay. I put a fresh diaper and onesie on Kadence and held her closely, “Kay are you alright?” I asked. “Yeah,” She shook her head, “But I was gonna have that,” She said, sitting down in the rocking chair. She was crying and I had no clue how to comfort her, “Kay, I just,” I sat down on the foot rest and handed the baby over to her. She looked at her and smiled, talking to her.

There was a knock at the door, “Uncle Riker has a present for,” He paused, “Kay?” “Riker,” She said, looking shocked. “I had no idea you’d be here, um,” He said, looking down, “I’m sorry,” He said, “I’ll put the gift on the table and leave,” “No,” She said, “Stay,” She smiled at him. That was the first time I’d ever seen such a genuine smile on a person ever. She seemed truly happy to see him.

He sat down on the foot rest next to me and hugged me, “Everything okay Riker?” I asked, leaning onto his shoulder. “Yeah,” He sighed, “Kelsie called me,” He said, looking at the ground. “Oh,” I said. Kay looked up, but didn’t say anything. “She told me she wanted to work things out and that she wanted to try, but when I suggested she come over and hang out at my place, she said she’d rather not go to a place where you guys have been.” He shook his head, “How ridiculous is that! She’s crazy, Alyson. She was so nice at first. I mean I’m not in any way justifying what Rocky did, but she seems so innocent and she’s manipulative, so I understand why things happened with them the way they did,”

“What had happened Al?” she whispered to me. “It’s a long story,” I whispered back, "We can talk about it later. I sighed, turning my attention back to Riker, “But anyway,” He said, “I don’t need someone like that in my life,” He smiled at us, looking at Kadence and touching her hand, “I’ll just hang out with girl here, my niece,” He said. Kay smiled at him, “Riker,” she said quietly, “Yeah?” He questioned, looking up at her, “This was going to be us,” She said and her voice squeaked and she started crying again. Kay had never been so vulnerable or emotional in all of the years I’d known her. She had changed so much since she and her boyfriend Jay broke up apparently. She still modelled and acted, but she took more time to spend with her family and she said she spent a lot of time with our other friends, the one’s I hadn’t seen since before I had the baby.
