Chapter Nineteen: This Moment Could Be our Last

I have a doctor's appointment today to check up on the baby. Cody is on his way from recording to come with me. I'm so excited to hear the little one's heartbeat. This is something we've both been looking forward to for a while now. 

"Babe, I'm home!" Cody shouted.

"I'm upstairs! I need your help!" 

"Are you okay? Are you hurt?" He said frantically. 

"Yes, baby I'm okay. I just need your help with my shirt. Now that I have a bump, it won't go over it. Can I wear one of your shirts?"

"Yeah of course. Let me just get this off." He pulled up the shirt off my head.

"Damn." He whispered.

"What?"

"You're so damn beautiful, you know that?" He pulled me close and kissed me sweetly.

"Thank you, but I don't feel it." I grabbed his shirt from his hand and threw it on then put on my shoes. 

"Well to me you are an absolute gem and I love you so fucking much."

"I love you too babe." We finally headed out and drove to the appointment. 

I got into a room and got set up for my ultrasound. My heart began to beat rapidly as the thought of hearing no heatbeat flooded my brain. I turn to Cody and reach for his hand, squeezing hard. 

"What's wrong?" 

"What if we don't hear anything..."

"Baby we will. you're going to be okay, our baby is okay." He leaned down and kiss my forehead. I smiled and took a couple deep breaths. 

"Hello again! How are we doing today?" Dr. Hollingsworth said as he walked in. 

"Nervous." I said.

"I understand. Let's see how the little one is doing. Lie back for me, Ms. Eisley." I laid back and he put the gel on my stomach and began the ultrasound. I squeezed Cody's hand, holding myself back from expecting the worst. It's if that's what I was getting. Dr. H had the look of concern on his face. He excused himself and walked out the room. My heart began to race again. He came back after a few minutes with another nurse and she began to check for a heartbeat. I couldsee the look of distress in her face. She was feeling the same as I was. She grabbed my hand in an endearing way and walked out. Dr. H sat down and took a deep breath. 

"No it's not..." I choked. He just simply nodded and put his head down. I felt all of the blood rush from my head to my feet. My thoughts began to race sporadically. Tears began to stream down my face and I buried my face in Cody's stomach and cried. I sat up and got off the table. My heart just dropped. 

"I'm so sorry..." He said to us. "We'll need to do a D&C surgery to remove the fetus..."

"When?"

"I would recommend you do it today. It won't take long and it won't cost anything for you since you're covered. You won't need to stay overnight, but you would saty for a few hours post-op, then you can be sent home."

"Okay. Let's go ahead and get it done."

"Can I be there? Please?" Cody spoke up.

"You're not really supposed to, but I'll slide you scrubs and everything. Just this one time." I grabbed Cody's hand and we walked the operating room. Cody got on the scrubs and mask. He got in front of me and got onto his knees, head leveled to my stomach. 

"You were the best thing that has come into our lives. You would've loved to see your mommy when you came out. We love you so much. You are so precious to us. We hope to see you again soon." I was bawling my eyes out and so was he. 

"I love you so much, Eisley. I promise you whenever you want to try again, we will." I nodded and smiled, kissing him sweetly. after a while, they prepped me for surgery. Cody sat to my left and held my hand and rubbed my leg. Next I knew, I was drifting off. 

1 hour later

I woke up after what felt like days, but was only an hour. I look over and see Cody sitting on the bed looking at me and rubbing my leg still. I smiled and looked at him. 

"Are you okay baby?" He asked.

"I will be." I reached over and wiped his eyes and cheeks. 

"I feel extremely empty, but I know we would've been such awesome parents." I added. 

"I know. I just wish we weren't in this predicament."

"Me too baby. We'll try again though. When the time is absolutely right."

"I'm ready when you are." We both smiled at each other and he kissed me. After a while, Dr. H came in and sat down. 

"How are you guys doing?" He asked. 

"To tell you the truth, I think we're going to be just fine. There's always next time to try again."

"I'm so happy to hear that. I'm extremely proud of you both." I smiled and thanked him. 

"You're free to go home when you feel you're okay to. Just buzz for me." He left and it was just the two of us again. 

This process wasn't going to be easy, but it was bearable.
