Varian nibbled at a cookie, just freshly baked by princess rapunzel herself. A year had passed, Varian had been in his dark cell for 2 years so far and his release still seemed very far away.
Eventhough the bed was uncomfortable and the food was bad, he didn't feel as miserable as he felt when he just started his imprisonment. Every other day princess Rapunzel came to bring him a bag of delicious food, which he was very grateful for, eventhough he knew it was just to make him waver from his thoughts of revenge. He admitted it was working a little bit.
From time to time Eugene came by to tell him stories of his adventures or to tell him about the things going on in the world right now. Which Varian apriciated, it formed some distraction from the boring prison life.
Even king Frederic and queen Arianna came to visit him this one time, for a little talk. The king gave him a little life lesson about good, bad and fogiveness. In his speech he made clear that even Varian could be forgiven in time. When they left Varian gave the queen a little look and muttered the most silent sorry.
Queen Arianna smiled at him. "I know why you did what you did and I would have done the same. Let the guard know if you ever need me" she smiled. Varian nodded. He knew what she meant. He could call for her when he was ready to appologise, but even in these 2 years he was here he wasn't ready still. Anger and sadness were still hanging like a dark mist around him though the mist was getting thinner.
The moments he didn't have a visitor he thought about alchemy and new inventions he could make once he regained his freedom. In his first year in prison he could only think of devices he could use to harm people, but those thoughts changed once revenge wasn't too much on his mind anymore. His thoughts kept moving towards a whole different subject. To Cassandra.
For all the things he started to regret he regret hurting her the most. He felt the luckiest when Cassandra came to visit, yet it hurt so much. He wanted to appologise to her so bad, but he just couldn't he feared that she wouldn't believe him.
Today she came to visit him. "Hey Varian" she mumbled. "Hey Cassandra." "Uhm I brought you something or rather someone to keep you company." She picked a sleepy raccoon from her bag. "Ruddiger!" Varian exclaimed. "It has been years where did you find him?" "In your lab in old Corona." "You went all the way to my lab to find him?" She nodded.
"I'm still mad at you though" Cassandra said. "I understand." "You do?" "Yes, I hurt you eventhough you were nice to me." She nodded. "I have to go" she said and made way for the door. "Cassandra wait!" She turned to face him. "I- I'm" he sighed. "Could you call the queen for me?" "Of course" she muttered and closed the door behind her.
"Stupid, stupid Varian! Why is it so hard to applogise to her!" Little did Varian know that Cassandra was still in front of the door with a soft smile. She wasn't really mad at him anymore, but the words he just said she wanted to hear them from him face to face, that would be the only way she could finally really forgive him, because that is the kind of stubborn person she is.
Cassandra didn't knew Varian hadn't really called for the queen, but to stir him up a little she still went and asked for the queen to go to Varian.
The queen went down to the prison cells. Varian had wanted to ask for the queen, later actually, but if he started with his row of appologies now he might as well start with her.Queen Arianna slowly walked into the dark dungeon. "You requested to speak with me?" She asked with a surprised tone in her voice, for the time Varian had been imprisoned she had only heard him talk once, maybe twice. "Yes" Varian spoke softly. "It's quite hard to suddenly tell you this after 2 years, but I think I must." He slowly petted Ruddiger's furry back. "I turned and looked the queen in her eyes. "I'm sorry for what I've done, I should not have kidnapped you to use as bait for the princess and bring harm to you, I'm so sorry."
The queen, who did not expect an appologie just stared at Varian and in his eyes she could notice his sincerity. "Thank you Varian, I'm gald to hear this, though I'm not the only one you should appologiese too" she said. "I am aware." "And I can't promise you that the king will set you free even if you've appologised to everyone." Varian nodded. "I know, but it's the first thing I can do when making things up to everyone."
Arianna nodded. "That is true. I will tell the king that you are making ammends." "Thank you" Varian said with a small smile. "Is there anything else I can do for you?" She asked. "Could you ask the princess and Eugene to come down here?" He wondered. "Not Cassandra?" "No! I- I mean no sorry I can't uhm" "I know, feelings are terrible when you want to tell something to someone you have those feelings for" queen Arianna smiled. "I'll ask them to come here." "Thank you, very much."
