(One day I'm gonna accidentally publish a one shot with no title bc I forget istfg)
You travel through the tight space, the space in between hallways that only servants and the queen and king know about. Maven follows behind you, holding a single candle to light his way. You don't need a light to find where you're going. You love showing him the secret passages, it's almost scandalous. The Whitefire Palace seems sinister in the dark, the silence and small whispers putting a heaviness in your chest.
You suddenly stopped walking, and Maven nearly ran into you. You put your chin forward, hands on both walls in a way to settle yourself.
"Elara."
"Where?"
"Shhh, up ahead."
You both didn't move, scared she'd hear the floorboards over your pounding hearts. She was having a conversation with her husband, the conversation filled with more of her voice than his.
"My job as a mother does not correlate with your job as a father. Do not cross my line."
Maven strained to see his mother, his arms gaining goosebumps from her raised tone. He places a hand on your hips before blowing out the candle.
"I am just concerned. He has taken notice of the servants. He might be interested in Reds."
"No son of mine will be taken by the simpleness of a Red, I have made sure of that."
You bite your lip, holding back a laugh. You even tilt your head to the side in case you make a noise. Maven notices and places his lips against your neck, his body against yours.
"I am not defaulting your role as a mother, only Maven's role as a prince."
Elara squares her shoulders, almost offended by Tiberias's words. He stands, his gaze pausing on the stop where you hid. Maven doesn't so much as breathe as his father returns his stare to the blonde.
"I do not doubt Maven's capabilities. Just put his head back on the right place. I don't want to live knowing my son fancies nonsense over his own kind."
"You will not," Elara growls. She doesn't comment more as Tiberias exits the room.
Your heartbeat increases as her blue eyes scan the room, prying Maven isn't thinking of anything. You close your eyes, only opening them when the sound of the door closing relieves your nerves.
"Mercy," you whisper.
Maven only chuckles, digging his face into your neck. He smiles, though is happy you aren't facing him to see the muscles of his face twitching.
"Do the servants here conversations all the time?"
"Yes. It's the best part of the job."
"I'm not the best part?" Both of his hands wrap around you as he rests his chin on your head. You grab his hands, smiling as you lean into him.
"Of course, you are."
