Actual letter:
Dear Pete and Patrick,
There's nothing to help you.
There's no one to save you.
I'm in your head.
I'm never leaving.
Push me out.
Lock me away.
I'm still there.
Lingering.
Waiting.
Attacking.
When the second sun falls, all will be lost.
I'm your worst nightmare. What they think:
They're very confused. The letter is much shorter and they begin to believe the attack could happen soon as the suspect feels they're closing in. Baffled by the words "the second sun", they look it up. They only get Greek legends and scientific discoveries that don't tie into the notes. What it means:
Luke has begun to close in on them. His plan is starting to be thrown into action. His letters are shorter now that he's close to starting. He gives a nod to himself, acting as if someone else is writing the letters. The line "no one can help you" is a mention that Luke isn't helping them, even though Luke is actually writing the letters. He's never leaving their heads either. Pete and Patrick have repressed the pool memory and "pushed it out and locked it away" but it's never going away. Neither will this. The second sun actually means the second night. They have 2 days. By sunset on the second day, his plan will have been executed and the couple will be dead. This entire note and what Luke does after basically gives him away. He's a cop, he has the jurisdiction to put the two into protective custody but he doesn't. He has the option to take he letter and fingerprint scan it but he doesn't. He has the option to even get a search warrant for the other suspects houses but he doesn't.
It's obvious it's him because anything he can do to help would spoil his plan.
