Chapter 9
An Evening I Will Not Forget by Dermot Kennedy
Muffled voices and faint touches is what I came back too. A heavy weight pressed against my every being, preventing me from moving. I tried to open my eyes but the struggle was futile. The voices became clear as the seconds passed.
"–YOU DID NOTHING!" The voice yelled.
"NOTHING?! HE'S THE ONE WHO KEEPS GETTING HIMSELF IN THESE SITUATIONS!"
"HE CAN'T HELP IT! Anxiety is a strong drug!"
"His anxiety isn't that bad. He overreacts. Over thinks. He gets himself in these situations and he can't crawl his pathetic self out of them because he keeps doubting himself. The fact that he passed out because I got onto him about his behavior lately just shows how weak he is."
"Wow... How heartless can you be, Sam? That's your friend right there. Your best friend. How can you say all of that and not feel like a shitty person?"
"The truth hurts." Sam?
"Yeah, well, that's far from the truth." Corey? "Leave."
"What? You can't tell me to leave! I live here–"
"If all you're going to do is cause Colby misery then leave. He doesn't need negativity right now. You can come back later. But right now isn't the time."
"Whatever." Footsteps were heard after that. The jingle of car keys and the opening and closing of a door soon followed. A sad sigh filled the house.
"It's gonna be okay, Colby." I heard before going back into the world of nothing, surrounded by nothing, feeling nothing.
The second time I came to, soft whispers filled my ears. I slowly moved my body, glad that I could get out of the paralysis. My head pounded. I groaned as I sat up. "Whoa there. Take it easy." I heard then felt hands on my shoulders and back. "Are you okay?" Corey.
I slowly opened my eyes and looked at my roommate. I nodded. "Y-Yeah, just.... what happened? Where's Sam? My head hurts."
"Aaron, can you get Colby some Advil?"
"Sure."
"As for what happened and Sam, I'm not completely sure. I came home when you passed out. Sam told me you two got into a fight and he knew you were having an anxiety attack. You must've passed out from the attack. I told Sam to leave a couple hours ago." Corey said. Aaron came back in with two pills and a cup of water.
I took the pills and water with a small smile and swallowed the two. "Sam left? Why?" Then suddenly it all came rushing back. "oh...." I mumbled.
"You heard?" Corey frowned.
"I woke up but I couldn't move. I heard you and Sam arguing." I shrugged as I set the cup on the floor.
"What happened to make you freak out?" Aaron asked wearily.
"A lot was going on, I'll be okay." I have him a forced smile.
"Are you sure?" Corey asked, sympathy written all over his face.
"I'm sure." I said and slowly stood up. My head pounded and felt heavy, but I ignored it and made my way to the stairs.
"Colby, I don't think you should be walking up the stairs..." Aaron said.
"I'll be fine." I reassured.
"No, Colby I'm serious. Sleep down here tonight."
"I said I'll be fine." I slowly started making my way up the stairs. My legs felt like jello and suddenly, I regretted not listening to Aaron.
"Colby—"
"Ah!" My knees buckled and my sock clad feet slipped on the hard wood stairs. My shin hit edge of the stairs as I missed the railings. My body jerked backwards in pain but before I could hit any more stairs and cause damage to myself, hands held onto my back.
"I told you." Aaron said from above me.
"I told you." I mimicked, as Aaron helped me up and took me back to the couch.
"Stay down here. We'll get you a blanket and pillow." Corey said, pulling Aaron with him to go upstairs and get the needs. I sighed and laid down on the couch. After a few seconds, I heard soft footsteps and looked over to see Devyn walking towards me. I slowly sat up and she seemed to take the hint and sit down where my head was. I laid my head down in her lap and closed my eyes as she played with my hair.
"Do you think Sam's still mad at me?" I whispered.
"I don't think Sam could stay mad at his best friend." Devyn said. I hummed and listened to the loud footsteps of Corey and Aaron. Then I felt a warms surround me as a blanket was placed over me. I sighed in content and let the warm blanket and Devyn playing with my hair, lull me to sleep.
Sometime in the AM, I woke up to warmth and pillow underneath my head. I unwillingly opened my eyes, the sun only just beginning to rise. I slowly and sleepily looked around the room surprised to see all the roommates, excluding Sam, sleeping on the couch or in the bean bags. Aaron slept on one bean bag, Corey and Devyn slept on the other, and Elton slept on the end of the couch. I smiled softly.
Suddenly, paws on hardwood echoed through the house. Buddy, Navi, and Circa made their way into the room and took it upon themselves to make themselves comfy. Buddy moved his way to cuddle up with Aaron while Navi and Circa carefully jumped onto the couch. Circa curled around Elton, resting her head on his chest and sighing. Navi laid in front of me pressing her body up against mine. I slowly pet her and listened to her soft breathing as she fell asleep.
In my state of content, I forgot about Sam and I's fight. I closed my eyes and let sleep take me once more.
