JACK’S POV

***

Hi. I’m Jack Frost and I’m here to destroy the world.

Just kidding. Actually, my mom would kill me if I would. And hey, why in the world would I do that? I mean, life’s great. Smooth sailing and all. Yup, I’ve got no problems, no worries and no bad days whatsoever.

JACKSON FROST! YOU GET DOWN FROM THAT TREE!

Whoops. Okay so maybe I’ve got a few bad days. I look down from my treehouse and see my mother tapping her feet in anger. Mom pretty much does that when she’s mad. Really mad. Normally I’d do whatever she says but today, I was kind of a bit in the mood for a little teasing.

“And what if I don’t?” I tauntingly ask her with a grin. Mom’s face turns red and she looks at me as if I’m some piece of meat.

“Oh don’t you use that tone on me young man! Get down from there or else!” Should I give in? Be the good boy I always have to be? Analyzing….. Nah.

“I think I want to hear the ‘or else’ part first.” I smile as I lie on my chest and look at Mom glaring at me. Don’t you just love the way people scrutinize their face when they’re pissed off?

“JACKSON FROST, IF YOU THINK THAT HIDING UP THERE WILL DO YOU ANY GOOD THEN YOU ARE VERY MUCH WRONG! GET DOWN RIGHT THIS INSTANT!” I try to suppress my laugh as Mom attempts  to climb my tree. She keeps on muttering threats at me and I enjoying watching her as she tries to scale the tree but ends up with her butt kissing the floor. Ahhhh, precious moments. After a while, Mom finally gives up.

“Uhm mom…Do you want me to put the ladder down so you can come up here?” I ask and then mom goes into another episode of rage while I smile my butt off. Mom is so cute expecially when she’s mad. Don’t get me wrong but really, mom looks so cute when she’s in a fit. The way her brows meet. And her change in tones.

Wow. Cute.

Actually, I think all people look cute when they’re mad. Especially when they turn cherry red. But then again, it’s the cursing words that I can’t stand. Why do people have to curse anyway?

Suddenly, amidst mom’s complaints, the kitchen phone rings and then, there is silence.

I instantly jolt up and I feel a rush of emotions. So she did remember! I feel so happy that I practically jump down from my tree and land on the leaves I had just piled up that afternoon. Mom bolts in shock but weirdly, she remains quiet.

“Ugh…I came down from my treehouse.” I say in a barely audible whisper but Mom doesn’t get mad, which is kind of disappointing by the way. Instead she looks at me with a smile, okay so this is weird. Why is she smiling? She shouldn’t be smiling.

Unless…

Oh pancakes.

“Ugh…Mom…Are you smiling because I’m now down on the ground and you can like…finish me off? Because if so…” I gulp , “can I ask for a three second headstart?”

I feel my muscles tighten and I get ready for the sprint. But what Mom does next blows me away – not literally.

“Go inside and answer the call. I’ll follow in a minute.” She says.

“Seriously?!”

“Yes. Now go before I change my mind.”

I notice that tears are swelling up in her eyes but I also knew that her mood might change again and away from the safety of my tree wasn’t really a comforting thought. So I give her a smile.
