Medbay hadn't been warned of any drills, so when the red alert sirens started blaring through Leonard 'Bones' McCoy's office, he startled, dropping the padd that was in his hand, spilling his morning coffee over his crisp blue shirt. Cursing his captain, Dr. McCoy decided to forgo mopping up his coffee and picking up his padd in favour of stalking out of his office and into the main medical bay, pausing at the door in order to observe the bustling of the nurses, preparing their stations for whatever may come their way.

With a resigned sigh, Dr. McCoy plunged head first into the synchronised dance that the nurses performed, flittering between stations and collecting supplies.

Three hours later, the lack of casualties within sickbay would have led the medical staff to believe that the red alert were nothing more than a mere drill. That is, if it wasn't for the fact that the alarms were still blaring - much to the doctors annoyance - two hours after a regular drill should have ended, and that they'd not heard a word from any other part of the ship, communications cut off completely.

Silently.

Tepidly.

Waiting.

The trill of the doorbell on the medbay doors startled the staff within. Long had they wished for the comfort of their bunks, yet too apprehensive to take even the lightest nap.

Armed with naught but a hypospray, filled with enough sedative to knock out an angry gorn, Dr. McCoy tentatively approached the door, the nursing staff huddled behind him prepared for friend or foe.

With a hiss, the doors slid open, revealing a terrified ensign, quickly ducking to avoid the hypospray that had been hurtling towards their neck.

Relying on years of practice, the chief medical officer was not so easily avoided, and the hypospray paused, less than an inch from the ensigns neck.

With a breathy chuckle, the ensign glanced up at the doctor, the barest trace of a smirk lingering on their lips. "For a moment there I actually thought you were going to shoot me."

Stepping back, the grumpy doctor ignored the twinkle in the ensigns eye that he'd grown to love. Huffing, he grumbled lowly. "What in the blazers in going on out there? Medbay has practically been sealed off for the past three hours."

The mischievous glint only shone brighter.

"The Captain ended the drill over two hours ago sir. He said something about immunisations before retiring for the night."

Slowly, the doctor closed his eyes, and with a wave of his hand, dismissed the nursing staff for the night.

"Ensign, if the Captain doesn't show up for duty in the morning, try the airlock on deck 5."
