(2) Just a bad dream

Going to sleep was not always an easy task for El. Going to sleep usually meant revisiting her past, or sometimes even possible future situations. But once in a blue moon El got a full nights rest, and on an even rarer occasion she had a happy dream.

That once in a blue moon wasn't July 16th. El, Max, and the boys bad been out all day, getting ice cream and just showing El what a good time was. They had all parted ways when the sky began turning beautiful different shades of magenta, orange, and yellow, and Mike and El returned to the cabin.

As per usual Hopper scolded Mike for having El home a few minutes late, and banished him to the couch. But Hopper wasn't enough to scare Mike away from El, once he heard the older man's snores he jumped off the couch and shuffled to El's bedroom, where she waited patiently, sitting criss crossed on top of the covers.

"Hi El!" Mike said excitedly, as he quietly jumped on her bed and laid back, opening his arms, in hopes that she would cuddle up next to him. El smiled and laid down, setting her head on his chest and hugging him.

"Hi Mike." She replied softly and closed her brown eyes, breathing in the oh so familiar scent of "Michael Wheeler."

They lay in a comfortable silence for a while, the Mike noticed as El slowly began to fall asleep. He carefully slipped from her grasp and tucked her under the covers, grabbing a few spare blankets and a pillow for himself on the floor next to her bed. He situated a makeshift bed and rested his elbows on El's bed. He leaned down and kissed her forehead softly, then laid down on the floor.

"Night El." He said quietly.

"Night Mike." She replied sleepily. Mike smiled to himself and turned on his side, eventually falling asleep.

El was running, running from...from Mike? She panted heavily, she must have run a long way. As Mike closed in El stumbled and tripped over her own feet. She face planted into the gravel and tried scrambling away, but Mike had already reached her. Behind him was Lucas, Dustin, Max, and Will.

"Looks like the freak can't get away this time." Lucas stated with a smirk.

"Weirdo can't use her little freakish powers?" Dustin questioned in a mocking tone.

"Aww poor little Elly can't fight back anymore? Such a shame, and I was told she was strong!" Max laughed and Will stepped forward.

"Your just a huge burden, you took MY mother, and now all she cares about is you." Will spat.

El tried to hold back her tears and watched as Mike stepped forward.

"You were never one of us, never have been never will be" Mike stated matter of factly. "Maybe you should just go back to that lab where you belong." Mike said and laughed, high fiving his friends.

"Mike...Mike wouldn't say that." El muttered.

"El." She sniffled as tears poured freely from her eyes.

"El!" Everything started going blurry.

"El wake up!"

El woke up with a start. Sweat dripped down her forehead and she glanced around her room nervously, meeting eyes with a concerned Mike.

"Another nightmare?" He asked softly. El nodded briefly.

"It was different this time. You...you were there." She said quietly. "And Max, Will, Lucas and Dustin too." Mike nodded for her to continue while he wiped a few stray tears off her cheeks with his thumb.

"And the the things they said...the things..you said....Mike it was awful!" She sobbed into his chest, Mike rubbed her back soothingly.

"Shh sh it's alright El. Whatever it is we said, whatever bullshit stuff- none of it is true." Mike stated boldly. El pulled away.

"No, you were right, Will, he- he was right." She muttered and sniffles, wiping her tears with the back of her hand. "I really am just a burden...should go back to the lab..where I- I- belong." She said and tears gushed from her eyes again.

"No no no, don't you ever say that El. You know what, no! Don't you ever think it! You are not a burden and you definitely don't belong in that damn lab!" Mike vented, he placed one hand on her shoulder and used the other to mover her face, so that her eyes met his. "Everyone loves you El. I love you. Promise me you won't think like that again? Please?" Mike lowered his voice and looked at her eyes sincerely.

"Promise." El's said and looked down at her hands. "I'm sorry Mike."

"Don't be sorry, try to get some sleep ok? I'll be right here the whole time." Mike said in a hushed voice.

Well. I don't know why I did this. It's 11:47 and I have to be up at 7:00 tomorrow. I'm so stupid holy geez.
