"Guys guess what!" Max said as she rushed down the stairs to Mike's basement.
It was around the middle of summer break, meaning it was time for Max to go back to California for a few days to see her old friends.
Mike and El were napping in El's fort, they were in an insanely adorable position, both hugging each other, Mike's chin rested on her head and El's face was nuzzled up to the crook of his neck.
Lucas, Will, and Dustin quietly watched a movie, that day was hot, really hot, and the teens took shelter in Mike's cooler basement, with all the curtains drawn and lights out, a few quiet fans blowing softly to move around the humid air.
"Oh, hey Max, what's the news?" Dustin glanced at her throwing a piece of popcorn in his mouth.
"My mom just told me I could bring you guys to California this year, since Billy and my Stepdad aren't going!" Max said excitedly, she couldn't wait to introduce her California friends to her Indiana friends. If they were able to go that is.
"Seriously? Thats awesome!" Lucas said, standing up at give her a quick kiss on the cheek and stand beside her. "I'm sure my mom will let me go, she'd be glad to only have one kid to take care of for a few days." Lucas said with a laugh, referring to his younger sister Erica.
"I bet my mom would be ok with me going if she knew I would have supervision." Will piped up, smiling happily, he had never been to the ocean.
"Won't be a problem for me, as long as there's food I'm in!" Dustin said, a bit louder than intended. Mike groggily lifted his head, his black hair falling down over his eyes. He scowled and held El a little closer to him.
"Be quiet, you'll wake up El." He said and set his head back down on one of the many pillows that lay in the fort, closing his eyes after placing a sweet kiss on his girlfriends head.
"You two have been sleeping all day, it's time to get up, Max has exciting news if you want to hear it." Dustin stated. Mike groaned and hid his face against his girlfriend. She seemed to notice his movements, and begin to shift and wake up.
She let out a light sigh and fluttered her brown eyes open. Mike smiled down at her and placed a quick peck on her lips.
"Hi Mike" she said in a sleepy voice.
"Hi El" Mike responded. The two proceeded to stand up, stretch, and settle back down on the couch, Dustin and Lucas gave up their spots so they were fare game.
"What's up Max?" El asked, Mike draped his arm over her shoulder and looked at Max.
"My mom said I could bring my friends to California this year, I was hoping you guys could come and meet my old friends."
"Really? That's so cool!" El exclaimed, a bright smile cast upon her face. This smile soon disappeared.
"Hopper won't let me go." She said shortly after. Frowning as she knew he wouldn't let her go, not for a second.
"You don't know that, it's been over a year since you closed the gate, I think you deserve to go El. You of all people." Mike said. Will nodded.
"Yeah, well just because I deserve to go doesn't mean he'll let me." El said, Mike squeezed her hand reassuringly.
"We just need to talk to him, how about El and I go talk to Hopper, and you guys get permission from your parents, I'll ask my mom when I get back. Okay?" Mike instructed, the group of teens nodded their agreement and started departing the basement.
"We are set to leave next Wednesday." Max called as everyone left.

"El, you know it's not safe for you to go places out of Hawkins." Hopper said straight after El and Mike told him about the trip.
"but-"
"Kid...I want you to be safe, staying here is the safest place." He said, he hated the expression on her face after he shot her down. That look of submission that he always gained from her when they disagreed.
"No." She said after a moment of silence, she was determined now, she wanted to go, to see the ocean, and meet new people, and experience new things.
"I deserve to go Hopper. I've been stuck in this town my whole life. The farthest I've been was Chicago, you know you can't keep me here forever Hop... I'm going to leave someday." She said gazing into his eyes as she spoke the utter truth.
The authority in her voice sent a chill down her spine, she came to enjoy sticking up for herself.
"Kid.."
"I know it's hard for you, you want to keep me safe, but the safest thing you can do is let me go Hop, let me go." She wasn't even talking about the stupid trip anymore. El was 16. She was going to go to college in a few years, then get a job somewhere, maybe even travel to a different country.
Hopper needed to let her go, to let her grow up the way she should. Not tethered to this town that took so much from her.
"Okay." Hopper said.
"What?"
"Okay, you can go." He grumbled, El rushed to hug him, as her small body collided with his chest he embraced her tightly. "You have to promise me you'll be safe El. Promise me."
"I promise." She said into his shirt.
"I promise."
