They left the theater laughing.
"Damn this floor is freezing!" Dustin said
"What do you want me to do, fetch your slippers for ya?" Peter said back.
"Gee would ya sir? I would like that." Dustin said, putting his hands on his hips. Max and May giggled, Alaska going up to Dustin to finish their odd re-enactment of a scene from Aliens.
"Look into my eye." She faked a deep voice and used her pointer finger to drag on the skin under her left blue eye. Dustin chuckled and continued to chat with Alaska and Peter.
"Hey where'd Eric go?" Max asked, Mike frowned.
"Uh, he took off while I was coming back from the bathroom." El said, making eye contact with Max.
"Hmm that's odd." Max said, she let it go though, she couldn't lie and say Eric was one of her favorite friends.
Mike and El trailed behind, walking at a slower pace, hands joined. They walked in a comfortable silence, simply enjoying each other's company. Max would glance back at them on occasion. Will and May were walking next to her on either side now, and Lucas, Dustin, Alaska, and Peter went on about the movie.
"Mike and El are quiet." May observed, Will nodded.
"They're definitely not a very vocal couple." Max said, May listening intently, she was curious about the couple, they struck her as the "endgame" kind of pair.
"I think it's more about conveying their feelings through looks and stuff rather than words. That's how it's always been with El at least." Will explained, Max nodded in agreement.
She looked at Will. Almost as if asking if May was trustworthy enough to know about El's backstory.
"Yeah what's her story? She seems...different than a lot of girls our age, and I don't mean like, you know, the kind of "different" everyone thinks they are." May said. "It's hard to explain, but I feel like there's more to her than meets the eye, and Mike too. They look like they've been through a lot together."
This made Max and Will smile. Mike and El had been through a lot together. They had something that most adults envy, the pair was happy that May could see it too.
"Yeah, they have been through a lot. It's really complicated though, they always seem to come out the other side just glad to be with one another I guess." Max said.
"They're lucky to have that.." May said softly.
The group arrived at the house Max and her friends were staying at.
°*••*°
Dustin, Lucas, Alaska, and Peter were all passed out in the living room, sleeping on various couches, chairs, and blankets on the floor.
In Mike and El's room, Will, Max, May, El, and Mike were still up. Will drawing in his sketch book, Mike reading one of the comics Will had brought with him, El writing in her notebook, and Max and May chatting quietly about other things they could do while everyone was still here.
Mike, who was sitting on the bed with his legs crossed, looked over at his girlfriend's paper. She was writing poetry again, he liked when she wrote poems. He leaned down and kissed her cheek as best he could. El glancing up with a perplexed look, though she was smiling because she thoroughly enjoyed Mike's kisses.
"What was that for?" She asked him.
"Just felt like it" He said passively. May looked over at the two, still being quite curious about them, she decided to stir up some talk.
"So uh, how did you two meet?" She asked, Mike and El quickly averting their eyes from each other and looking at May. Will looked up from his drawing.
The group of Hawkins kids exchanged glances. They had to be extremely careful who they told about El, even though they hadn't heard anything from the lab, they could still be out there.
"If you don't feel comfortable telling me that's fine." May said. El chewed on her bottom lip.
May seemed the most trustworthy of Max's California friends to her at least."We met in 83, in the woods back in Hawkins. Mike, Lucas, and Dustin were looking for Will, and I was...running from my past I guess." El started. Max, Will, and Mike exchanged more glances.
"It was raining really hard, and Dustin and Lucas thought some monster was going to get us in the woods, and it was just El following our flashlights." Mike said.
"Have you guys been together since then?" May queried.
"Well we only got a week together when we first met, then there was a 353 day long period where we were separated." Mike said, frowning slightly.
"After that we finally got to see each other and it was great." El finished, it was a brief and broad version of their story to say the least.
"You guys have something really special, honestly. I've been on the earth for 16 years and I don't think I've seen two people so....genuinely committed to each other." She trailed off, receiving a small smile from El. The telekinetic girl found the utmost truth in May's words.
There was a silence afterwards. May knew more about Mike and El than some, but there was so much she didn't know. The fact that someone could see Mike and El's devotion to each other without even knowing the extent of their journey together was sort of enthralling.
"Well I'm gonna sleep, I'm beat." El said softly, she truly had an exhausting day.
"Me too." Will said, saying a quiet "good night" and exiting the room.
"I better get to bed too, May you want to stay in the bed Lucas and I claimed? He's in the living room now." Max chuckled, thinking about her nerdy boyfriend.
"Sure, night Mike, night El." She said, the two girls left the room quietly.
El yawned softly, sliding down under the covers a ways and cuddling up to Mike, who snakes his arm around her waist.
"Night El." Mike said, kissing her head.
"Night Mike." El muttered against his chest.
No more totally tubulars I promise 😂😂
