“Hey babe, can I tell you something?” I asked Michael as I walked into the bathroom.

He had just gotten out of the shower, a white towel wrapped around his waist. He was shaving his face, one cheek and his chin covered in shaving cream.

“Yeah, what?” he said while shaving.

“Would you be okay with Nathan coming with us to the doctors? I set up for there to be a DNA test, to see who the father is.”

He shrugged, still shaving. “I guess so, can I ask you something now?”

he stopped what he was doing.

“Do you think Nathan’s the father?”

“Do you?”

“Don’t-” he got angry. “Be honest with me. Please.”

“I don’t know.”

“What is your gut telling you?” his eyes narrowed, his face straight. I took a deep breath, avoiding eye contact.

“Think about out, after we got back together, we used a condom. But they can brea-“

“All you had to say was yes Jackie. I hope your gut it wrong” He stormed put of the bathroom, bumping into me on the way out.

MICHAEL! What if it is his huh? What, you’re not gonna love this baby? What are you gonna do? LEAVE ME?!” I yelled at him. “Come on, be honest with me now!”

“I will ALWAYS love you, but I could never love that baby if it’s not mine!” I never seen him actually cry, but tears were falling from his eyes. “Why him? Why didn’t you just talk to me? Why did you crawl to him? Huh? We could have worked it out then!” he threw up his hands, then running his fingers through his hair.

I couldn’t get myself to look at him. I started to remember why we separated.

At the time we were fighting a lot. I had just lost my job and Michael was training for the Olympics. Both of us were stressed. My paycheck helped cover my mom’s medical bills. I didn’t make much money, but the little I made, helped.

My mom had gotten into a car accident last may, it now being August. She needed surgery on my back, and for a few weeks was in a wheel chair. She needed me to help her around the house, and drive her to therapy. I lived the closest to her, so It was more convenient of me to help out more.

“I knew Nathan would put a smile on my face” I said to him

“Well he put more than a smile, you have a pregnant glow on your face!” he got up in my face. “I can’t do this anymore. I’m not raising Nathan’s child with you!”

“WE DON’T EVEN KNOW IF IT’S HIS YET!” I screamed.

The house went silent, then a knock on the door. I was holding in my tears of anger as I opened the door, it was Nathan.

“I guess now isn’t a good time, maybe I should meet you at the doctors office.”

“No no-” I put my hand on his shoulder “Michael can meet us there” I stared back at Michael in the house. “Be there by 3 alright?” Michael rose his eyebrow back at me at I walked out of the house.

“What happened it there?” Nathan asked.

“We fought” I replied. He just looked at me.

“Obviously, what did he say?” He opened the car door for me. I waited for him to sit in the drivers seat.

“Um, that he won’t be able to love my child if it isn’t his. Most likely he’ll leave me. I know it.” as we drove off, Nathan starred with one hand, putting his other on my hand.
