the streetlights remind me of you (but then, everything does)

i lie in bed at 4am
the curtains are wide open.
streetlights glow into my room
casting shadows shaped like you
the world is asleep
but i am wide awake.

when i step outside
the cold air envelops me
for a second, i feel warm and safe
reminded of your embrace
but the sharp winds bring me back
and i shiver in the cold

i'm walking down the road now
the neon signs blinking in shop windows
remind me of our late night adventures
i feel your hand in mine
but my fingers freeze in the cold
i put my hand in my pocket

i look up at the vast black sky
dotted with stars and constellations
and the huge white moon, full tonight
reminds me of stargazing and laughter
of parties in your back garden and falling in love for the first time

this time i do not feel warm
or safe
the cold surrounds me
biting, menacing, sharp.

the cold surrounds me
and this time,
it is i who embraces it.
