"steve, i want to go dancing." peggy declares, her english accent thick with each syllable. she wraps her arm around steve's, locking them.

"lets go to the stark expo first, then we'll go dancing, peggy." he replies, trying to suffice with a smile.

"we want to go dancing now." i chime in, pulling bucky's arm in the direction of the dance hall. we tug on the men but they refuse, stuck on going to the stark expo.

"fine. peggy and i will go together." i argue and she smiles, releasing her grip from steve. her arm locks with mine this time, ready to dance.

"see you boys later!" she waves to the men in dress blues as we walk away from them, heading in the opposite direction.

the summer night was warm against our skin, feeling wonderful. noises of cheerful people enjoying their final nights without war, fill our ears. we have to enjoy these moments while they last because sometimes the whole world can change with a snap of the fingers.

we enter the bright room filled with happy people, dancing. women savoring their final nights with their husbands and loved ones. the future may not withhold much fortune, but i will damn well make sure this night is unforgettable.

"let's dance, darling!"

my fingers wrap around peggy's wrist, taking her with me to the dance floor. her smile lights up the room, accentuating the red on her lips. we start swinging along to the music.

he was a famous trumpet man from out chicago way

he had a boogie style that no one else could play

he was the top man at his craft

but then his number came up and he was gone with the draft

our dresses fly around in the air as we move our feet. my hands grasp onto peggy's, preparing to swing dance with her. laughter aromatizes the room, filtering it with happiness.

he's in the army now, a blowin' reveille

he's the boogie woogie bugle boy of company b

she pulls away, twirling around before coming right back. our feet stay constantly moving to the rhythm of the beat, hair swaying with each motion.

they made him blow a bugle for his uncle sam

it really brought him down because he couldn't jam

the captain seemed to understand

because the next day the cap' went out and drafted a band

she twirls me this time, making me laugh. our hands intertwine, both of us watching as we boogie a jig with our feet. her eyes meet with mine, stained with delight.

and now the company jumps when he plays reveille

he's the boogie woogie bugle boy of company b

my breath shortens due to all the fast movement, me limbs becoming tired. peggy notices, siezing the dance, dragging me over to an empty table nearby.

"rest, im gonna go dance while i can!" she yells over the music and i nod, smiling cheekily.

my fingers fiddle with the end of my dress, pulling it down to cover my legs more. i whipe the drop of sweat off of my forehead before moving random strands of hair from my vision.

"whats a pretty dame like you doin' all alone in a place like this?" my mind recognises that voice from anywhere, a smirk forming on my lips.

i look up, seeing the beautiful man that i love standing before me.

"im waiting for my boyfriend."

"well where is he?" he plays along with the little game, looking all around the room.

my voice softens. "he's standing right in front of me."

bucky extends his hand and i gladly take it. we make our way to the dance floor, his arms creeping around my waist while mine go over his shoulders, both of my index fingers locking to keep them in place.

i look over, seeing peggy dance with steve. seeing them happy together was magical, steve was always terrified to dance with a woman but peggy changed that.

by watching them the realization of what's coming crosses my mind. my eyes stare hopelessly into bucky's.

"im gonna miss you."

he reach up and grabs my left hand, putting it near his mouth and kissing my knuckles. "i'll be back." his thumb rubs where his lips just were.

"will you make a deal with me?" i ask, becoming serious for a moment.

"anything for you."

"now a deal is a promise, and a promise is unbreakable, james." he smiles, dropping my hand and kissing my lips instead. it was short but meaningful.

"what is it, doll?"

"promise me, that you'll come back. promise me." my voice becomes weak, thinking of all the bad things that could happen to him out in the line of duty. a tear almost slides down my cheek but he catches it with his thumb before it gets too far.

his galaxy blue eyes peer into mine. he grabs my face with both of his hands, coming in very close proximity. with his face just centimeters away from mine, he whispers against my lips.

"i promise."
